The Globe. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1878. NEWS OF THE DAY.

The Ship Waikato.—The New Zealand Shipping Company have received cable advices of the safe arrival at London of the Waikato, all well. Ambbican Consulate. —The American Consulate has been removed to the offices of Messrs C. B. Taylor and Co., in the Union Buildings, Cashel street. Quarantine Stations. —Mr March, the immigration officer, inspected the quarantine stations at Ripa and Quail Islands yesterday. Everything was found in a most satisfactory state, and the buildings ready for immediate occupation should it be found necessary to ÜBe them.

Runaway.—Yesterday, shortly after noon, a horse and cart, supposed to _be under the charge of a man named William J. Bowler, bolted up Colombo street, in the direction of the bridge. The horse had no blinkers on or any bit in his mouth. In his career he came in contact with a baker's cart, and also collided with the Rev. J. S. Smalley's buggy, knocking down a boy, named Cummings, who was holding the horse. The buggy was at the same time upset and passed over the lad's body. Fortunately, the boy was unhurt. Entertainment. An entertainment, in aid of the funds of the Hagley Oak Leaf Cricket Club, took place last evening at Addington schoolroom. A very good programme of vocal and instrumental music, readings, &c, was submitted. Those taking part in the performance were the Misses Spensley, Mrs Kinsman, Messrs W. S. Smith, Rees, J. Coombes, Kinsman, Senger, Dansan, Caygill, Voules, and Toomer's Excelsior Band, under Mr W. Dorn. Altogether the entertainment was very successful. Wife Protection. —Late last evening a woman, accompanied by a child, applied at the police depot for police interference to protect her from the violence of her husband. She said she had been illtreated by him, and was afraid of sleeping in her own house at Sydenham. She was recommended to pass the night at a friend's house, and lay an information against her husband in the morning. Theatre Royal.—Tho " Pink Dominos" was repeated last night at the Theatre Royal, and alter to-night will be withdrawn. Tomorrow night Mr and Mrs Bates will appear in " Richard III," and on Monday evening Mrs Bates will sustain her favourite character of Queen Elizabeth, in the play of that name, Mr Bates sustaining the role of the Earl of Essex.
