Najtee, October 9, A large t-nJ .influential public meeting was held last night re Hie Maori double vote, and to petition the Legislative Council to excise the Maori franchise clause from the Electoral Bill. The chair was occupied by Mr Einwfcis. Among the speakers were Messrs Cornford (solicitor), Kennedy (merchant), Col, Lambert, Meoars Tanner, Knight, and Begg. The two latter spojke fayorably of the dual vote. Mr Knight was howled down because he attributed the movement .to interested ajotires.
With the exception of these two persona, the mooting was unanimous in denouncing the attempt to swamp the electorate with Maori names. The following resolulutions were carried amid enthusiastic cheers : —“ That, in the opinion of this meeting, the addition to the Electoral Bill introduced by the Government in committee, and passed by a narrow majority of the House of Representatives, by which a vote at ordinary elections of members of the House is conferred on all Maoris, irrespective of the payment of rates, who are seized at law or in equity of any interest in land of the value of twenty-five pounds, is unjust and unfair, as virtually placing the election of members of the House for this and the adjoining districts in the hands of the Maoris and giving them double representation.” “ That a respectful address be prepared for presentation to the Legislative Council, setting forth the injustice complained of, and praying that the obnoxious clause be erased from the Electoral Bill.” At the close of the meeting the petition was signed by most of those present. Wellington, October 9. In the Supreme Court this morning George Lorrimer, for larceny, wss sentenced to one year; and Higginson, for stealing from the person, to three, months, The trial of the natives for manslaughter at Poverty Bay is going on now. Ahaura, October 9. The contractors for the Little Grey Junction bridge are making slow progress owing to their having to drive through a reef.
