NEWS OF THE DAY.

The Case of MoOlatchie.—The man McOlatchio, who was assaulted in the Garrick Hotel last week, died at the Hospital this morning. The inquest will be held in due course. Civil Oases. —In the Supreme Court yesterday his Honor, on the application of Mr Garrick, granted an order for the civil case of Twentyman v Jebson, to be tried by a special instead of a common jury. Waikaei. —On Friday evening a very successful ball was got off in the schoolroom here, the funds received from which are to be devoted towards the purchase of books for the district library. Upwards of ninety tickets were taken. The Eueopban Cable. Telegraphic communication between Tort Darwin and Baujoewangi is still interrupted, but the telegraphic department has no authentic information as to when the communication will be restored. In the meantime messages are conveyed by steamer between Batavia and Port Darwin. The Oxfobd Mtjedee Case.— The trial of this case has been postponed until Friday. It was originally intended to hear it to-day, hut on further consideration his Honor extended the time until Friday. Theatek Royal.— “ Pink Dominos” was repeated last night to a moderately good house. It went very smoothly, and the various characters were well sustained by Mr and Mrs Bates and the members of the company. The Gaiety Theatbe.— Mr J. T. Hydes’ company appeared again last evening in the comedietta of “We all have our Little Faults,” and the burlesque of “La Sonnambula.” Both pieces went very well. Tonight there will be a change in the programme. Raxgitata Bbidqe. —The substantiality of this bridge has been so far restored that the trains now cross it at their ordinary rate of speed, and when the repairs are quite completed, the bridge will be in a more satisfactory condition, and less liable to injury, than it was before the recent severe floods. The Eivee Road.— The City Council workmen are now engaged in erecting a fence along the river, on the line of the road recently formed from the Victoria to the Colombo Bridge, in continuation of Oxford Terrace. Perhaps tho Council will see their way at an early date to open this road for traffic, as it would be a very great saving of distance to vehicles coming from the northern end of Colombo street. All that is wanted is the metalling of the road and the formation of the footpaths. Accident.— Last night the man William Thompson Brown, in tho employ of Mr Fraser, Kowai Pass, was admitted into the Hospital suffering from a broken thigh. As stated yesterday the accident occurred through his falling off a cart. It seems that on Monday afternoon Brown was driving a cart loaded with a truss of hay, when one of the wheels got into a rut, and he lost his balance and fell off, one of the wheels passing over his right thigh, and causing the injury he is suffering from.
