Several similar accidents have occurred. A few of the inhabitants have returned, but only a very few will remain over Sunday. The “Star” commenting on the Ministerial defeat re the beer tax says : —“ It cannot be denied that by taking the tax to a division as a Ministerial measure, and then abandoning it, the Cabinet must suffer damage. A blunder has been committed, whoever is responsible for it, and another such mistake would be fatal to the Government.”

The Legislature in admitting grain free of duty is exercising the minds of both millers and growers of wheat, and many are of opinion that in this action they are offering a bonus to the Californian market, inasmuch as the mail steamers thence are paid a subsidy, and before long will, no doubt, be bearers of a large quantity of flour and wheat. The latest quotations in the San Francisco market for their extra superfine was at the rate of £9 to £9 1 Os per ton, which could be delivered here at £l3, including all charges. This would in a great measure undersell Adelaide, but would not interfere materially with the Southern trade.
