THE EDUCATION BOARD NORTH CANTERBURY DISTRICT.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the members of the above Board was held at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon, at the Normal School. Present —Messrs John Inglis (chairman), Duncan, Webb, Eev. 0, Fraser, and Mr Tanored. WOEK OF THE CHAIRMAN. The work done by the chairman since the last meeting was approved of by the Board. EEFOBTS. A number of reports were laid upon the table, being those of the'inspoction of various schools by Mr Eestell, the inspector. ST. ALBANS. The report of Mr Eestell was read, in which that gentlemen stated that he was of opinion that the teaching staff was one-third greater than it need be. NOEMAL SCHOOL. The Eev. C. Fraser read a report on the teaching staff of this school. The Board went into committee to consider the report. SCHOLABSHII’S. A letter was read from the department of education, asking the Board to give more definite information on the subject of scholarships. It was resolved to reply to the communication, giving the necessary information. NOEMAL SCHOOL TEACHERS. The Chairman stated that Mr C. C. Howard had written objecting to the three months’ notice given to him and the other teachers of the Normal School, and urging an extension of the notice to six mouths. The Chairman said he had had some conversation with the secretary, and they had seen no reason to alter the decision of the Board. Still if the Board at their present sitting chose to do so, it was only for them to say so, and he (the chairman) would carry out their wish. The Eev. C. Fraser said he should be inclined to move that the notice should be extended from three months to six. Mr Webb and other members thought this would have a bad effect upon the teachers by inducing them to think they would be kept on. After some discussion, it was resolved to let the present notice stand.
EAST OXEOBD. The Chairman again read the resignation of Mrs Milligan, the head mistress of the East Oxford school
After some discussion it was resolved to give Mrs Milligan three months’ salary. KAIKOBA. Mr H. H. Knowles applied for the position of master of the Kaikora school, also for the situation of mistress for his wife, and for that of pupil teacher for his son. The appointments were made, and the Board allowed a sum of £2O for expenses of removal. ST. ALBANS. An application was made from the committee of the St. Albans school, asking that the salary of Miss Foster should be raised from £6O to £75 per annum, and also asking for the appointment of Miss Finnay as pupil teacher. The applications were granted, and it was resolved that the second master at the school should receive notice that his services would not be required after the next three months. KOWAI PAHS. Notice was received from the committee that they had appointed Mr Slipper to this school, subject to the sanction of the Board. It was resolved that the Board should ask the committee for a list of the applicants. KILINCHY. A number of accounts for repairs and supplies to this school were passed, but at the same time the Board refused to sanction certain unauthorised expenditure. KOWAI BUSH. An application was made for a small grant for deepening the well at this place. After some discussion it was resolved to ask for fresh estimates for the works required. QBBENPARK SCHOOL. An application for a grant from this school was made for the purpose of making repairs, rendered necessary by the late gale. Application granted, and school committee requested to call for the tenders for the work in question. CHEET3EY AND SOUTH MALVEBN. Tenders were accepted for roofing the schools at both these places with corrugated iron. The Board then went into committee, after which it adjourned.
