Fire at Napier.
Napiee, October 1
A fire broke out at the Spit at one this morning which destroyed the premises of Bankers, sailiuaker, juid Bed ward's store and engine shed. The progress of the fire wap stayed by the brigades. The insurance ia not yet ascertained. The fire broke out first at Benker's, but the origin is unknown. Dunedin, October 1.
The question of whether the Education Board ie liable to pay rates for schoolmasters'
residences was considered in the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday. Judgment was reserved.
A letter from the Mayor of Dunedin, offering to supply suburban boroughs with water, at the rate of sixpence per 1000 gallons, was brought under the notice of the water supply conference last evening. A resolution was carried—'' That the conference agrees to accept the proposal of the Dunedin Corporation in regard to the water supply, provided an agreement is entered into that when high suburbs require water supply they shall be permitted to get it from Ross Creek, or be supplied by the Dunedin Corporation at a fair rate." The Mayor of Dunedin expressed himself dissatisfied with this decision, and left the room. The vital statistics of Dunedin for the last quarter were—Birth, 464; deaths, t 15 9; marriages, 94.
