NEWS OF THE DAY.
St. Paul's Church.—The inauguration of the new organ in the above church will take place on Thursday evening, when a grand recital of sacred music will be given by the combined choirs of the Wesleyan Church and St Paul's Church. Mr R. T. Searell will act as organist and Mr H. F. fowle as conductor on the occasion. Burlesque— The Gaiety Theatre will be reopened this evening with a small burlesque company, in which Miss Marie Wilton, the Misses Alice and Amy Johns, and Messrs J. P. Hydes, Wilkinson, and D'Elmaine will appear as the principal members. The pieces will be " A Kiss in the Dark," and the laughable burlesque entitled "La Sonnambula." Additions are in contemplation to the strength of the company, and should the public patronage warrant it, Mr J. P. Hydes, who assumes the management, will venture on a summer burlesque season. Little River.—A public meeting was held in the schoolroom, on Saturday last, to sympathise with the families of Messrs Belcher and Sorrenson, who are in great trouble. A subscription list was opened in the room, when the sum of £l7 15s was collected. Hotel Changes. -It is understood that the Commercial Hotel has changed hands, Mr Radcliffe's interest having been purchased by Messrs Cookson, Sheppard, and Hadfield, who take possession to-day. The Terminus Hotel has also changed hands, Mr Wearing having sold out to Mr Richmond, of Waimate. The Marionettes. —There was a very good attendance last evening at the Oddfellows' Hall, when the clever performance of the Marionettes was again repeated. From first to last it went splendidly, the various songs and mechanical feats eliciting well deserved plaudits. The antics of the clown and pantaloon in the harlequinade fairly brought down the house, and the beautiful transformation scene, which closes the performance, came in for a large share of admiration. Tonight the performance will be again given. Gale at Ashburton. —Another severe gale visited Ashburton on Monday morning, the wind being a little northerly of that on Wednesday last. No reports of serious damage have come in. The river, which had been in heavy fresh Bince Wednesday morning, was going down rapidly. Alarm of Fire. —Yesterday abont 3.20 p.m. the Lichfield street fire bell rang out an alarm. A number of people ran in the direction of St Asaph street west, whence smoke was seen ascending, and on arriving at the spot it was found that the private dwelling-house of Mr H. B. Lane was on fire. The fire originated in the top of the roof, near the chimney, burning two small patches, but was very quickly put out, rendering the assistance of the Fire Extinguisher, which was promptly on the spot, unnecessary. Mr Superintendent Harris was of opinion that the fire was caused by sparks from the chimney. The house is insured for £4OO, and the furniture for £2OO in the New Zealand Fire Insurance Company. Diocesan Synod.—The "St Mary's (Addington) Parish Magazine" states that the second session or the tenth synod of this dioceße is appointed to be held in tbe College Library on Tuesday, October 22nd. The Bishop will not be present at the Synod : his arrival from England being expected about Christmas.
