NEWS OF THE DAY.
Selwyn County Council.— A meeting of this Council was he'd to-day. A repors from tho engineer was laid before the Council, as to the present state of the Malvern water-race, upon which considerable discussion arose. It was resolved that the Council accept the control of the water-race, and that the engineer he requested to take over the same from the Government. It was also decided to request the Government to proclaim the Malvern water-race to be vested m the Council, and also to give permission to the Council to occupy certain portions of railway and tramway reserves, The engineer was directed to prepare specifications of contract Eo. 3, from the old river bed to the Malvern Road Board office tenders to be invited so soon as the consent of the Government fhall have been obtained to the use of the railway and tramway reserves. The monthly report of the Inspector of Slaughter Houses was submitted, and it was resolved to instruct the inspector to take proceedings against those who had not complied with the Act. An offer of additional land for tho Central Cemetery was referred to the trustees when appointed. After transacting some further business the Council adjourned. San Francisco Mail. —This mail reached Wellington last night. The Taranaki was not, however, to leave with the Southern portion until 3 p.m. to-day. The mail will therefore be delivered in Christchurch tomorrow morning.
Chamber of Commerce. —A circular has been issued by tho secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, containing a communication addressed to him by Mr Monckton Syunot,respecting the introduction of Australian wools into China and Japan. In the circular Mr Bird, on behalf of the Chamber, states that, if the project could be carried out, it might effect u change of tho greatest possible benefit to the wool-growers of Aow Zealand, and he, therefore, begs to commend the subject for special consideration. He adds: —“The committee veil I be happy to meet a deputation or any body of wool-growers to discuss the subject, and will also do their best to bring the matter to a successful issue ; but they expect, as it is one of such special interest, that the sheep farmers generally will take action, and also contribute in furtherance of this object.'’ Opera Glass —All the preliminary arrangements for the commencement of tho rehearsals of “ Martha ” in connection with tho Opera Class, under the auspices of Signora Voiosfa and Mr 11. F. Towle, are now complete. By the Kingarooma Mr Towle lias received the scores and baud parts of the opera,
mid the first rehearsal is fixed for October 2nd. Judging from the high professional reputation of those who have taken the initiative in this matter, tho production of opera di camera in Christchurch should not be one whit less successful than tho recent performances in Dunedin,
