THE CIVIC ELECTIONS.
The time for receiving nominations for the election of five City Councillors in place of those resigned closed at noon to-day. At that hour six nominations had been lodged with the Town Clerk. The following is a list of the candidates John Barrett, nominated by John Carl and Edward Rayenhill; Reuben Binstead, nominated by P. Paterson and James Carter ; Berry Cass, nominated by R. Sutherland and W. S. King; William Clifford, nominated by M, Sandstein and P. Paterson ; Frederick Jenkins, nominated by H. Sawtell and A. J. White ; William Tremayne, nominated by William Fraser and Nicholas Bowden. Unless any of the candidates retire, the polling will take place on th 7th of October. Rumours are about, however, to the effect that there will bo no contest, the explanation being that the “ running” has been made on behalf of a certain interest, and, as everything has so far gone aatifffaefmUy, wjll be wise and politic of the wire-pullers to withdraw one of their candidates. Will the Mayor be requested to convene a pubiio meeting, to give the candidates an opportunity of stating their views ? Will, ho, if so requested, think proper to comply with the demand ?
