John McLean, the cook of Fraser and Tregears’ party on the Momahaki block, was found drowned on Thursday. It was believed he had slipped down a steep bank. It was afterwards found that powder and bullets had been stolen from the tent. At the inquest to-day a bullet was found in the man’s head, which leaves little doubt that ho was murdered. Hew Plymouth, September 21. At a meeting of the Hew Plymouth Harbor Board held to-day, a resolution was passed that their solicitor bo at once instructed to take action to recover from the Hew Zealand Iron and Steel Company the fines that have accrued under their lease of the beach. The barque Courier, which has been purchased by a company, has been fitted out for a trading expedition to the north-east coast of Hew Guinea. The Wanganui ran alongside the barque Alice to tow her to sea, when the crew, headed by the officers, took charge of the forecastle bead, mutinied and refused to proceed with the captain. The crew would not allow the anchor to be weighed. They have been three times bef*re the Magistrate for refusing duty, and were ordered on board or imprisonment at the captain’s option. Captain Anderson, of the Auckland Volunteer Engineer Company, has applied to tho Government for tools to equip the corps for tho construction of batteries, earthworks, and pontoons. A local Engineer of the regular service, serving in tho company, offers tho necessary instruction. Hitherto the corps lias been simply a rifle company. The Government had favourably considered the application. Soma admirers here of Charles Bradlaugh, of “ Fruits of Philosophy” fame, have invited him to pay a visit to the colonies. Ho is not in good health, and it is thought a tour would be beneficial. He would of course deliver lectures in the principal towns of Australia and Hew Zealand. At tho annual meeting of the Auckland Regatta Club it was recommended to make a schooner race prize of £IOO, to draw Southern competitors. The coal industry is assuming large proportions. In addition to the Bay of Islands mine, the Taupiri mine has an output of 2000 tons per month, the Waikato Coal Company 800 tons, and tho Whangarei mines 120 tons; making, with Maramara, about 7000 tons per menth. Dunedin, September 22. At the meeting of tho City Council on Tuesday next, Cr. Fish intends to move that the opinion of the Attorney-General be obtained as to whether the Council has power to increase the salary of the Mayor during tho currency of his office. It is also proposed to appoint a committee, with tho view of securing tho co-operation of the suburban municipalities in providing a water supply for the city. Madame Cora and Yal Yose’s company draw largo audiences in Dunedin, and at the conclusion of the season here will proceed to Northern towns.
