BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting of the members of the Board of Education for the district of North Canterbury was held at the Normal school at three o’clock yesterday afternoon. Present—Mr John Inglis (chairman), and Rev. Chas. Fraser and Mr H. R. Webb. APPOINTMENTS, &0. The Chairman reported what appointments had been made since the last meeting, also the expenditure upon the various schools. The business done by the chairman was approved. AVLESIiUEY. The meeting of ratepayers for the election of school committee was fixed to take place on Monday week at the house of Mr Johnson. LOBUEN. Some discussion took place upon the boundaries of this district, and the secretary and inspector were instructed to visit it, and make make a report as to the propriety of the establishment of three schools in it. LYTTELTON. It was resolved to perform certain repairs to the master’s house at Lyttelton, and to call for tenders for the work. The tenders to be subject to the approval of the Board, PUPIL TEACHERS. Mr Webb said the pupil teachers who had just been appointed at the Lyttelton school were nearly useless through being so small. They wore, however, the best they could get. They had lost four pupil teachers and only three had been put in their places. The limitation of the scale was the cause of their having such young teachers. Rev. Charles Fraser said there was no doubt that the pupil teacher system had been overdone. It was resolved to let the matter stand over for consideration at the next Board meeting. KILLINCHY. It was resolved to call for fresh tenders tor additions to the school at this place. ST. ALBANS. The Chairman said the school at this place had received notice from the Drainage Board to provide earth closets. The expense would be £l7los. The Board authorised the expenditure. BUBNSIDE SCHOOL, The expenditure of £l2 10s was aul horised to clear away a quantity of gorso on the ground surrounding this school. SHEFFIELD SCHOOL. An application for £lO was made for the purpose of clearing the plantation surrounding the school. The Chairman said the Board siad already given the sum of £2O for this purpose. It was resolved to vote an additional £o. HAL VEEN. It was resolved to call for tenders for improvements in the school at this place. LOWER HEATHCOTE. An application for a master’s house at this place was deferred. 20UTHBE00K. It was resolved to do some slight repairs to this school, but tho main application for enlargement was deferred. OUST. The resignation of Miss Tucker, the mistress of the school at this place, was accepted. Miss Tucker was recommended to apply for the position of second mistress at East Oxford. NORMAL SCHOOL. A letter was read from Mr J. J. Patterson, teacher of the first division of tho Normal School, stating that he had received the appointment of head-muster at tho Nelson school, at a salary of £3OO a year. should, in order to improve his position, accept the Nelson appointment. Tho consideration of the matter was postponed. KOVVAI HUSH. A letter was read from the teacher of this school, drawing the attention of the Board to the fact that (he committee frequently let tho school for the purposes of dancing. The letter was couched in strong terms. It was resolved to return the letter to the teacher, with the information that all letters must come through tho school committee. greenpaek. The meeting of ratepayers for the election of a school committee, was tlxed to be held at the schoolhouse on Monday, the 30ih instant. Mr Tancred hero entered the room and took his seat.

The Board went into committee at this stage, after which it adjourned.
