There were seven persons on board tho Kaiuma when she was at Waitara —Captain Maule, his son, and Frank Leipman, better known as the Professor. He was the first man who introduced the rope tying trick in Auckland, fourteen years ago, at the Prince of Wales Theatre, and was brought down to Taranaki by Sandbridge, now of the “Northern Advocate.” Mitchell was a boy going to see his friends at Kaipara. At the Harbor Board’s monthly meeting a letter was read from Mr Turnbull, M.H.R., stating that he had introduced a Harbor Endowment Bill. A letter from the Government was received, refusing to allow the Board to use any land between the railway line and highwater mark at Timaru. The engineer’s report re commencement of the harbor ■works was read, and was very satisfactory. Although a considerable quantity of cement had been condemned, owing to the dilapidated state of the barrels, there was quite enough already on hand to keep going for some months.
