There has been a fearful colliery accident at Kedow Vale. Three hundred were killed. Eighty were rescued. Fourteen horses ran for the St. Leger, The race was won by four lengths by Jannette.

The Imperial Department of Justice is showing more toleration towards the Socialists.
London, September 12. The seat of the Duke of Abercornin South Wales has been injured by fire.
All the officers and men absent on leave have been recalled, as a measure of precaution.
AUSTRALIAN.
Sydney, September 13. Trickett and Rush are arranging another match for the Championship, with fixed seats. Eighteen populous villages and ten rivers have been discovered in the interior of New Guinea.
Brisbane, September 12. Chester, the Government agent, has telegraphed that he has crossed New Guinea, and found six rivers and a number of villages. The people are cannibals but friendly, and the country fertile. He discovered what he believed to be ebony.
PARLIAMENTARY.
Last Night’s Proceedings.
The House last night was occupied from shortly before ten until rising, over the resumed debate on the Triennial Parliaments Bill.
Messrs Bunny, Huesthouse, and Heney, opposed the Bill, on the ground that it was not asked for by the country, was not rerequired, and entailed too much expense upon working men and poor candidates. Mr Douglas considered Triennial Parliaments would lead to a system of delegation instead of representation. Mr McMinn argued from experience that the expense need not be so great as was made out, and said the people in his district had for years cried out for Triennial Parliaments.
Mr Mueeay would propose an immediate dissolution if the Bill were pushed. Messrs Saundees and Feldwick supported the Bill on the ground that it woule have a moat beneficial efiect alike on thd people and their candidates. Mr Swanson took a similar view.
Mr Woolcock oppposed the Bill on the score of useless expense being entailed, and that it took about three years’ experience of Parliamentry affairs before a member began to feel himself of much use beyond mere voting power. Mr Sutton moved the adjournment of the debate.
The House divided.—Ayes, 20 ; noes, 23. Mr Babton opposed the Bill, remarking that Triennial Parliaments would result in the House being unsettled. Mr Fitzeoy supported the Bill. Mr Pykb said that in supporting this Bill the Premier was striking a blow at democracy, which would become a dead letter in New Zealand the day the Bill become law. Ho felt it his bounden duty to protest against the suicidal policy of passing such a measure as this. Mr Rowe moved the adjournment of the House.
The Speakeb explained that if this motion was carried the result would be to shelve the Bill.
The Hon. Mr Fishes would support the Bill.
The motion for adjournment was put, and the House divided.—Ayes, 19; uoes, 19. The Speaker gave his casting vote with the noos.
Mr McLean moved the adjournment of the debate.
The House divided.—Ayes, 22 ; noes, 19. The debate was ultimately adjourned (after several divisions as to date) until Wednesday next at 11 p m. The House adjourned at 3.5 a.xn.
