[Per Tararua, at the Bluff.] It is said that Professor Pearson is to form one of the trio, with Berry and O'Loughlen, as Beform Bill delegates to England. The chairman of the Eastern Extension Cable Company, in announcing the determination of the directors, sent zhe following telegram to Colonel Glover :—" Company hare no power to allow Press combination. The Board's resolution of 20th of August must therefore be strictly carried out. The responsibility of breaking off negotiations must rest with the press, who will be the sufferers. They do not seem to appreciate the sacrifices which the Eastern Company makes to assist the Extension. Make your arrangements to leave Melbourne, as further concessions are impossible. Intimate this ais our final decision."
The sheep sales last week realised about £25,000, and the sales of one farm alone amounted to over £II,OOO.
The weather has been very close for the time of year. The Land Tax Commission is now sitting. There are nearly 140 appeals to be dealt with.
Betting on the Melbourne Cup is very dull lately, owing to the absence of the ring in Sydney. Auckland has been backed for a large amount.
