CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, September 7. [Before G. L. Lee, Esq., R.M.] Failing to Support. —John Davis was charged on warrant, with failing to provide his child with adequate meens of support. Evidence was given to show that the son had been in charge of the Charitable Aid Board since the 2nd August. The sum of £2 odd was duo. Defendant said he had been mate of a vessel, and had got into trouble. His boj had been taken from the hotel in which he had been left. As soon as he (defendant) could get employment he would arrange for the payment of past expenses and for taking away his son. He was allowed to go cn condition that as soon as employed he would give an order upon his employers for the amount due. He was formally remanded for a week. Arson. —James Smith was charged with wilfully sotting fire to two cottages in Worcester street, the property of Dr. Symes. On the application of Inspector Hickson ho was remanded till Monday, the 16th inst.

LYTTELTON. Saturday, September 7. [Before J. T. Rouse and T. H. Potts, Esqs., J.P.’s.] Laeceny.— John Hawker vras charged by James Miller, a seaman, with having stolen his swag from the Lyttelton Hotel. The evidence brought against prisoner was conclusive, and Sergeant-Major O’Grady having proved several previous convictions against prisoner, he was sentenced by the Bench to six months’ imprisonment with hard labor.
