OPENING OF THE LINE

FEOM DUNEDIN TO CHRISTCHURCH.

TO-DAY’S DOINGS.

[FEOM OUE SPECIAL HEPOETEE.]

[By. Telegeaph.] Dunedin, Sept. 7.

The members of our City Council are delighted with the warm and hospitable manner in which the Mayor and Councillors of Dunedin have treated them. Nothing could be better than the way in which, their comfort has been attended to.

The Lawrence trip to-day was not largely attended. Very few Canterbury men went. It was felt that after the long and fatiguing journey on Friday, and the prospect of a long one on Monday, a further railway Journey was hardly desirable. The illuminatirns last night were simply splendid, and there must hava been 12,000 or 12,000 people in the street. To-day the Governor visited Messrs Willis and Seymour’s panorama of New Zealand, which has attracted a good many Northern visitors. It is approaching completion. At two o’clock His Excellency will open the Carnival in Inglis’ Buildings. The banquet to-night will bo a grand, affair. The room in Guthrie and Larnach’s* Factory will hold 500 guests, and has been beautifully decorated.

Last night about 300 people visited the banqueting hall. The “Star” last night contained a very strong article respecting the treatment of the Dunedin reporters at the Mayor’s banquet. The banqueting hall is very prettily decorated, and on the walls are hung pictures of several of the founders of Otago, including Captain Cargill, Dr. Burns, the first minister of the First Church, John McGlashau, Judge Wilson Gray, &c. The toast, list is not very long. It comprises the usual loyal toasts, “The Governor,” “Ministry,” “The Mayor and City Council of Christchurch,” “ The Parliament of New Zealand,” “ Success to the Railway System of New Zealand,” “Sir Julius Vogel,” “ Our Visitors, ” “ The Press,” and “ The Ladies.”
