THE HINEMOA AND TAUPO. There was an exciting race between the Col. Govt 's s.s. Hinemoa and the Union Company's s.s. Tanpo on their passage from Wellington to this •port The Tanpo, which was the hrst to start, lert Wellington wharf at 4.15 p.m., and hud fresh breeze half across the Straits, after which it became light and pulfy, being often dead ahead. The Tanpo being clean, having come oil the sup quite recently, showed splendid steaming powers, although carrying a heavy cargo, and reached Ly.ttelton at 7 a.m. to-day, having thus done the trip in lHi. 45min., really good time. The Hinemoa left Wellington wharf at 5.55 p.m., and experienced similar weather, arriving at Lyttelton at 8.30 a.m. to-dav, thus doing the trip in 1 In. 35min., ten less than the Tanpo. Both vessels made splendid time. and the Tanpo especially excited great surprise by her capital time, it beins: thought that the Hinemoa, being iu ballast trim, would have much the best of the run.
