MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCII. Wednesday, July 24. [Before C. Whitefoord, Esq., R.M.] Drunkenness —One first offender was lined ss. Mary Kennedy was fined 20s with alternative of forty-eight hours' imprisonment. A number of previous convictions had been recorded against her. Indecency.—W.Calahan was charged with this offence committed on the train at Middleton. He was fined the mitigated penalty of 40s, and ordered to pay Is cab hire. Laeceny.—James Finn was charged with stealing a pair of boots worth 18s from the shop of Georga Gordon. Harriet Gordon, wife of George Gordon, identified the boots which had not been sold. Samuel Stewart, pawnbroker, deposed to prisoner having pledged the pair of boots produced for 6s. Prisoner told witness that he had made them himself. Detective Benjamin deposed to receiving the boots from the last witness, and getting them identified by George Gordon as his own make. Witness arrested prisoner yesterday, and charged him with stealing the boots. Prisoner said the boots were of his own make. Prisoner, in answer to the Bench, said he had nothing to say in his defence. Two previous convictions had been recorded against him. He was sent to prison for three months' hard labor. Lunacy: raoM Drink. —Henry Snowden was remanded to Ljttelton for eight days for medical treatment. LYTTELTON. Wednesday, July 24. [Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M., and J. T. Bouse, Esq., J.P.] Assaults. —Thomas Holder was charged with this offence by J mos Payne. Mr H. N". Haider appeared for the defendant. From the evidence of several witnesses it appeared that, on the conclusion of a case between complainant and defendant on the 17th instant, they walked down the street together, and Holder spit at Payne's face and used abusive language towards him. It was however stated by defendant and one witness that accused simply spit in a contemptuous manner, and not in Payne's face. The dismissed the case, but cautioned Holder. He would be bound, over to keep the peace if he used more provoking language towards Payne. Sarah Ferdinand was accused by Alice Treveljan of this offence. Mr H. N. Nalder appeared for the defence. This was a row between neighbours, in the course of which a lot of abusive language was used, and defendant threw some water in Mrs Ferdinand's face. The Bench fined accused 10s, costs, ss. Civil Cases. —D'Authreau v. Garraway, claim £2 9s 6d ; judgment by default, costs 9s. Ealam v Johnston, claim £5 4s 4d; judgment for amount claimed and costs 13s. Dr. J. T. Rouse v Crater, claim £9 17s 6d; Mr 11. N. Naldcr for plaintiff; ordered to pay 30s per month. Mrs E. Baker vW. Agas, judgment summons, claim £2 (is fid ; ordered to pay 10s a week or be committed for one month. Teansfeb of License. —A transfer of license from A. H. Hardecke to D. Lazarus for the Victorian Dining Rooms was granted.
