The " Gazette " notifies that stock arriving from abroad must be quarantined for ninety days before they will be certified as uninfected. The Government have decided to call for tenders for four locomotives and rolling stock. INTERPROVINCIAL. [PEB PBESS AGENCY.] Wellington, July 4. It is announced in to-night's " Gazette " that the following land in Canterbury provincial district is withdrawn from sale :—"All that area in the provincial district of Canterbury containing, by estimation, forty thousand acres more or less, bounded towards the north by a right line due east from the issue of the Tekapo River from Tekapo Lake five hundred chains ; towards the east by a right line drawn south six hundred and forty chains ; towards the south by a line due west to Tekapo River, six hundred and forty chains; and towards the west by Tekapo River to Tekapo Lake, the starting point; excepting therefrom preemptive rights and sold land." This is proposed as an endowment for the Milford Harbor. The Supreme Court was occupied all day with the case of Wm. O'Connor, charged with attempting to administer strychnine to Wm. Light. He was found guilty, and is to be sentenced to-morrow morning. Patrick Comoy, for cutting and wounding, was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment with hard labor.

A telegram from Otaki states that the Hydrabad has been driven further ashore, and is almost dry at low water. There is not more than ten feet at high water. The first letter, dated 20th of June, was from the Mai'ine Department, Wellington. It acknowledged receipt of tho Bo.trd'B letter of 12lh June, and forwarded a memorandum made upon it by Mr Blackett, stating his opinion that tho Harbor Board bud too much Btreos on the fact that Sir John Coocle recommended a site for the railway station. He appeared to "haye accepted it as a fact agreed upon that the railway station should be parallel to Crawford street, as shown upon lithographic plan submitted to him as the one agreed to at the conference held February 9th, 1878, and his recommendation simply ' amounted to this—That its position was too fur out into deep water. graphed back that it could not understand the memorandum, and after several telegrams had passed, the Board prepared an exhaustive reply, setting forth that its interpretation of Sir John Coode's report agreed with his expressed opinion while in Dunedin, but disagreed with the Government's interpretation. It was resolved to despatch this reply. The libel cases of Macassey v. Reed and Iked v. Macassey, will commence tomorrow in the Police Court. Mr Denniston appears for Mr MacaSßcv, and Mr ismith for Mr Eeed.
