[Per Press -Agency ] Napieb, July 5. Last evening the Rev. de Berdt Hovell, the new incumbent of St. John's, was inducted in the presence of the Bishop of Waiapa, by the Rev. Samuel Williams, as deputy for Archdeacon Williams. There was a large congregation, and the ceremony was very impressive. Waitaea, July 5. Rewi is still here, and intends remaining for some time. He is sending Wetere to Wellington. He 6tated distinctly this morning that he will not accept a seat in the Upper House, and will not accept any gift from the Government till the whole matter is settled. Blenheim, July 5. At a meeting of the D'Urville Island Copper Company, last night, forty-five shareholders were present. The articles of association were approved, and the following directors appointed : —Messrs C. Redwood, R. Phillips, H. Owen, J. Redwood, Garling, C. Davis, Joseph Ward. Wellington, July 5. In the Supreme Court, on William O'Connor being brought up this morning for sentence for attempt to murder by administering poison, he asked the Judge to remand the sentence for a short time, to enable him to call witnesses as to character, namely Mr Shearman, Commissioner of Police, whom he had known twenty-one years, also Mr Fox and Mr Lawson. The Judge then postponed the sentence till Monday, when the prisoner said ' 'I will then state the full particulars of this affair before this Court and your Honor, and then it will be seen who is the guilty party." Dunedin, July 5. On the case Macassey v Reed, and Reed v Macassey, being called on this morning, the Attorney-General said that he appeared, not as counsel but as the friend of both parties, and had to state that, through the intervention of a friend, it had been agreed to withdraw both informations. He asked therefore that they should be withdrawn. They were withdrawn accordingly. The " Evening Age " has been served with a writ for £SOOO damages at the instance of a money lender named Benjamin, in consequence of remarks made by that paper on a case recently before the Court.
