ARRIVAL OF HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR.
The Hinemoa "with, his Excellency and party, consisting of Captain and Mrs Maling and family, Lord Harvey Phipps, the Hon. 0. Sheehan, and Messrs Grace, Rattray, and Hone Nahe arrived at 830 a.m.jto-day. His Worship the Mayor of Lyttelton, Hons. E. Richardson, and C. C. Bowen, SirCiacroft Wilson, Drs. Donald and Kouse, Major Lean, Captain D. Craig, Messrs H. P. MurrayAynesly, H. R. Webb, Reeves, and other gentlemen waited upon his Excellency, who remained aboard the steamer till 11 a.m., at which time he proceeded to the railway station, accompanied by the Mayor Councillors and other gentlemen in attendance. A detachment of the Christchurch Volunteer Artillery, under the charge of Lieutenant Stanself and Sergeant-major Raven, fired a Vice-regal salute of seventeen guns when his Excellency landed, and several of the ships also showed their loyalty by firing. The vessels were gaily dressed, and there was a considerable crowd on the wharf to see the Governor land. The party proceed to Christchurch, by special train, shortly after 11 a.m. On the arrival of the special train at the Christchurch railway station, his Excellency was received by their Worships the Mayors of Christchurch and Sydenham, accompanied by the members of the Christchurch City Council and the Sydenham Borough Councillors. Amongst the gentlemen who were present on the platform to receive his Excellency were Messrs E. C. J. Stevens, M.H.R., E. Richardson, M.H.R., W. Rolleston, M.H.R., W. Montgomery, M.H.R., Hon. John Hall, J. Evans Brown, M.H.R., Joseph Palmer, H. J. Tancred, T. M. Hassal, H. P. Lance, L. Walker, R. J. S. Harnian, and others. of honor composed of a detachment of the Christchurch City Guards, under the command of Captain Hawkes, and the Engineers, commanded by Captain Warner, together with the Volunteer Cavalry band, were drawn up in double file on the platform on either side of the entrance to the station. On stepping from the carriage on to the platform, which was carpeted, the guard of honour presented arms and the band struck up the National Anthem. His Excellency, accompanied by Lord Harvey Phipps, and the Hon. Mr Sheehan, M.H.R., was then addressed by the Mayor of Christchurch, who expressed the satisfaction he felt, ou behalf of himself and the citizens generally, at welcoming his Excellency to the city. His Excellency briefly replied that the pleasure was reciprocal, and, having cordially shaken hands with the two Mayors and the Councillors, quitted the station and took his seat in a carriage,which was waiting to convey him to the Club. The other seats in the carriage were occupied by Lord Harvey Phipps, Mr Richardson, M.H.R., and the Hon. John Hall. The carriage was then driven rapidly to the Club, escorted by a detachment of the Volunteer Cavalry under the command of Lieut. Slater. A small body of police, mounted and foot, were also in attendance at the station. On leaving the station three cheers were given.™
