COUNTY COUNCILS.

SELWYN. A meeting of the Council was held to-day at noon at the Government Buildings. Present—Hon. J. Hall (chairman), Messrs Eolleston, McMillon, and Dr. TurnbuU. petition. A petition from the inhabitants of Bakaia district, praying for a bridge over the Selwyn at Glentunnel was read and received. chaieman's statement. The chairman and Mr Eolleston were appointed to represent the Council at the Conference to be held at Wellington on July 21st. COUNTY EESEVE3. * A letter from the Tuapeka County Council, with reference to the reserves, was referred to the reserves committee. OKNTEAL BOAED OF WOBKS. A letter from the Wairarapa East County Council, requesting co-operation in obtaining a Central Board of Works, was directed to be acknowledged, the Council being of opinion that the matter would be best dealt with at the Conference. BAKAIA GOEGE FEBBY. Further correspondence with the Government was read on this subject. BEGISTBATION OF HOGS. A letter was read from Mr Inspector Broham, stating that on and after July Ist the police would not undertake the collection of fees or the issuing of dog collars. It was resolved that the Government be communicated with, informing them that the Council were endeavoring to obtain information as to the best method of carrying out the work, and requesting that the police, for the present, might be allowed to do the wcrk. It was also resolved that the chairman communicate with the various Eoad Boards in the county, and ascertain whether, in the event of the Council des-ring it, they would undertake the collection of fees and issue of collars, at a remuneration of ten per cent. MEETINGS OF COUNCIL. The future meetings of the Council were definitely fixed to be held on the last Friday in each month, at 10.30, unless otherwise ordered. SLAUGHTEB-HOITSE LICENSES. The committee appointed to consider the question of slaughterhouse licenses, &c, brought up their report, which was adopted. It was resolved the Chairman confer with a solicitor as to the preparation of by-laws, and that a special meeting of the Council be convened to consider the same. Also that applications be invited for the office of Inspector of Slaughter-houses, under the provisions of the Act. MALYEBN WATEB BACE. It was resolved to advertise for applications for the office of engineer to the Malvern water race, the remuneration to be at the rate of 5 per cent, on the money expended by the Council. HEATHCOTE swing beidge. A motion by Dr. Turnbull as to the maintenance of the Heathcote swing bridge, the Ferry and Sumner roads was discussed at some length, and the fuioher consideration adjourned t; 1 ! the next meeting of Council. The Council then adjourned.
