The “ Morning Herald ” of May 24th says : Although possessed of as fine a fleet of steamships as cau he found in any part of the colonies, the Union Steamship Company, ever ready to consult tho interests and comfort of the travelling public, have determined to make a further addition to the vessels at present owned by them. Many croakers predicted that when the railway system became perfected there would he no use tor steamers, which would then have to seek fresh places for their employment; hut the experience ot England, at least, has shown that the larger tho ramifications of tho railway system, the more work fell to the shipping, whether propelled by sails or steam. The U.S.S. Company, having in view the desirability of connecting the ports of Lyttelton and Wellington hy a fast steamer, to perform an ocean ferry service to dovetail in with, tho railway system which will terminate at the two ports mentioned (at least, for many years to come), intend obtaining from the home country a first class steamer of great power—one that would well perform this service, at the same time being suitable for other trades. Mr J. Darling, the suporintendiug engineer for the company, has nearly finished the model and plans, and his kindness we are enabled to give particulars. In the first place she will he constructed of tho nest materials necessary to place her in the highest class at Lloyd’s, one of whose surveyors will specially oversee the work. Her dimensions are to be 270 ft. keel, 38tt. beam, and 26ft. depth ot hold, giving 1800 tons builders’ measurement, or 1000 tons net register. This will make her carrying capacitv, exclusive of 500 tons of coal in the bunkers, equal to 1000 tons measurement, on a maximum draught of 15ft. She will he propelled by a screw driven hy a pair of engines of 300 h.p. nominal, placed amidships, similar in construction to those in the s.s. Wakatipu, which give a very large indicated power on a moderate consumption of fuel. The high pressure cylinder will he 46iu. in diameter, and the low pressure cylinder will he 82in., with a stroke of 4ft. These engines are to drive her at the average rate of fourteen knots per hour at sea. Steam will be supplied by four boilers placed athwart ship, a very convenient method, and one that admits of a well-ventilated stoke-hole. The bunkers will also he placed athwart ship, one at each end of the boiler space. As soon after the model and plans are finished ns is possible, the order for tho construction of this fine vessel, which will eclipse anything yet in the colonies, will be Bent home. The Union Company will also shortly call for tenders in the colony for the construction of a passenger launch for the company s use, as there are several places in the colony where such a vessel can tender the larger steamers, and act as feeders to them, SHIPPING TELEGRAMS, Wellington, May 27.
