Taiaroa sails for Northern Ports this afternoon. The s.s. Taiaroa reports having spoken the barque Rose M., of Sydney, hound to Lyttelton, at 5 p.m. on May 20th, in Cook's Straits ; that vessel desired to ho reported. The Himalaya was shifted into the Malacca s berth, at the "Gladstone Pier, that vessel being moored outside the Himalaya to finish her loading. The Western Monarch took the Himalaya's berth. The flags were half-mast on the vessels iu port yesterday, as a token of sorrow at the death of MiNichols, of Dalgety, Nichols and Co. The schooner Reward, Captain AVestlake, which left here on Monday afternoon, made the passage to Wellington iu 22 hours, a very smart trip for a sailing vessel. The Western Monarch and Cicero have been delayed in their loading by the inclemency of the •weather. The steamboat Tongar ; vo, from Leßon's Bay to Sumner, made her first trip on Tuesday. She crossed the Sumner bar at 7 a.m., when the pilot, Mr J. Day, went on board and proceeded with her to the Steam Wharf. This boat is the propel ty of Mr Smith, and is intended for the timber trade between Leßon's Bay and the Heatheoto. It appears (says the Dunedin "Star") that at the instigation of the Hon. M. Holmes, some of the Oamaru shippers, immediately after the wheat began to come down to the port, pi iced themselves in communication with the New Zealand Shipping Company and the Albion Shipping Company, with the view of obtaining ships of 700 tons burden for loading direct to Loudon. These companies telegraphed to the harbormaster at Oamaru, asking the available depth of water, and were informed iu reply that only Hi ft., calculating for ebb and flow of the wave, could bo depended upon. As there was no sea-going snip which did not draw HM't. in ballast, this put an end to the prospect of getting the ships there. A curious circumstance, almost unknown in shipping annals, occurred (says the "Oamaru Mail") on board the barque Lhandiere lately. During the morning the donkey-engine on board the hnlk Hera was busily engaged in rattling salt out of the Chaudiere, and so great was the friction that a large wooden block, suspended aloft, through which the rope runs, caught fire, and in a very short time was in flames. As soon as the seizing burnt through the block fell on deck, and the noise it then made attracted the attention of the man at the engiue, who quickly acquainted the chief officer with the fact. A tarpaulin on which the block fell was slightly burnt, being discovered in the nick of time. SHIPPING TELEGEAMS. Auckland, May 22. Arrived—Josephine and Linda Weber, from Lyttelton. TIMARTT, May 22.
