The Sea Bird sailed for Brisbane at midnight. The s.s. Southern Cross and Wanaka sails for Auckland, via East Coast this afternoon. The ship Pleiades sailed for London early this The Mercury was loading at New York for Wellington, Dunedin and this port on March 6th. Captain Pankow of the schooner Onward, which arrived at Auckland on May 6th, has reported to the Customs a very strange incident in connection with the voynge, which demands publicity, as it may lead to inquiries being instituted to solve a matter which so far appears enveloped in mystery. When leaving Eussell, the Onward encountered stron" N.N.E. winds, and about three or four miles from port a squall sprang up, which was of short duration. Subsequently, saw a fore-and-aft schooner running as it were for the Nine Pins, and steering as if she came from the North. The strange schooner had her foresail down, and the master hauled on to the wind when the squall passed over, and stood for Cape Brett. About 1 p.m., however, a second squall struck the Onward, and sent the vessel on her beam ends, sweeping the deck, shifting cargo, and stove in the boat. When it passed away, and everything had been made as snng as possible, Captain Pankow got his glass and looked round for the stranger, but could not see anything, although half-an-hour before the schooner was only two and a half miles on the starboard bow of the Onward. The position of the strange craft, when List seen, was such that it was impossible for her to weather Cape Brett or run back to the Bay without those on board the Onward seeing her. The only way of escaping the sight of the Onward was to make Deep Wafer Cove, but as the wind was from the N.W., and dead in, it was hardly likely the strange schooner would make for it.
