COURSING CLUB.
A meeting of the Coursing Club was held yesterday afternoon, at the Shades, Mr W. G. Walker in the chair. After the minutes of the last meeting had been read and confirmed, the following business was transacted : The Secretary reported that he had engaged Mr Reed as slipper, at £1 per day. It was decided to accept the entry of Mr Searrell'B Tasman. The Secretary reported that he had received nineteen entries for the Birthday Stakes. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Brown, seconded by Mr Porter—" That the slipper be provided with a uniform." The following stewards were elected: - Messrs Porter, Judge, Strouts, Brown, Hill, Duncan, Mitchell, Deanes, Saunders, R. C. Bishop, J. Jerome, W. G. Walker ; the President, Vice-President, Patron, Secretary, and Treasurer, to be ex-officio stewurds. The Secretary read a sketch of the programme for Friday, May 21th. It was approved of. It was determined that a draw should take place at the Shades on May 22nd, when also the stewards would have their respective duties assigned them. The Secretary also read the list of entries for the Birthday Stakes. The following new members were elected : Messrs J. J. Parker, H. Churteris, W. Reeves, and D. O'Brien. Mr Roper was nominated by Mr Disher, and the nomination was seconded by Mr Brown. The Chairman suggested the advisability of the Club expending £5 for the purchase of nets, for the purpose of catching hares in places where they abound, but which are not suitable for coursing. He believed they would have no difficulty in obtaining permission to take the hares thus, in order to distribute them about the country in places which would afford good sport at future meetings. Messrs Saunders, of Ashburton, had told him they could find 2000 or 3000 acres upon which hares could be turned.
The meeting unanimously adopted the suggestion of the chairman, and voted the sum of £5 for the purchase of netß.
