AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, May 1. Political matters continue quiet. The Chief Secretary and some Ministers have been attending a Liberal tea meeting in the Western District, when it was stated that the Reform Bill will be (ho only measure introduced next session, but all were very reticent ns to details of the measure. The Governor received despatches by the mail, but the precise contents were not made public, but according to Ministerial sources the Governor’s conduct has been approved of. At the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce yesterday the retiring president delivered the usual address, and referring to the state of trade said tho result which had been obtained by the mercantile community had not shown a profit commensurate with the amount of capital and energy engaged. He trusted that some combined and determined efforts will be made to prevent the possibility of any recurrence of the political experiences of the last four months. Mr David Moore was elected president for the present year. Sir James McCulloch will resign his seat in tho Assembly in the course of a day or two, when Mr Francis will stand,for AYarrnambool. Mr William Nicholas has been appointed lecturer on mining at the University vice Mr Ulrich. At the annual commemoration at tho University on Saturday the under-graduates were so turbulent os to call forth a rebuke from the Chancellor. Severe gales with heavy rain have been experienced. On Sunday a boat containing two men was capsized in the Bay, and tho men were drowned. A seaman was also washed from the deck of tho barque Florinda coming up the Bay. The discovery of deep beds in two of the Stawell mines has caused some excitement in mining circles. The value of the discoveries is not yet apparent , being not yet sufficiently opened out to ascertain whether they are gold bearing. Dakoy Bros., of Ballarat, wire and machinery merchants, have failed ; liabilities, £22.900 ; assets, £25,000. The latter consists of stock. E. B. Morecombe, draper, in Collingwood, has failed for £19,000. Roberts and Shorter commenced the billiard matches last night, the latter receiving 250 in 1000. Roberts is playing in great form. Adelaide, The “ Register” has exposed one of tho newly-elected members of tho Assembly, and shown that he has been convicted, both in Melbourne aud Sydney, of forgery and uttering.
