Arawata, Captain Underwood, left Wellington at 5.30 p.m. on Saturday, and arrived in harbor at 9.15 a.m. yesterday, took aboard outward Suez mail, and sailed for Melbourne, via South, about 11 a-m. A breeze from the S.W. sprang up yesterday morning, which enabled several vessels rt sail for their respective destinations. Amongst them wore the Gatlin, for Gatlin’s Eiver; Nelson ior Napier; Cleopatra and Sarah and Mary, for Greymonth; Alma, for Melbourne ; Linda Weber, for Auckland; Laju, for London ; and the Emerald and Hannah Barratt, for Wellington. THE CONTRABANTIEEE, The cutter yacht Contrabantiero, Capt. Pennul, arrived in harbor oa Saturday. She is from Auckland, and was hound for Wellington, but the late N.W, gale blew her off the land, and she was obliged to seek shelter in this port, being out of provisions, and having sprang aleak. Capt. Pennul reports leaving Auckland on April Pith, and having a succession of N.W, gales, No less than six times did the gallant little craft arrive within a short distance of Wellington, hut five times she was driven back to seek shelter under Cape Palliser. The last time the gale was so strong that it drove her 200 miles off the land. Directly the wind abated the yacht bore up for Lyttelton, where she arrived as above. The passage has been a most perilous one, those aboard never expecting the little vessel to weather the storm. Capt. Pennal states that in an experience of twenty-three years he has never witnessed such a frightful sea before.
