FOOTBALL.

The match on Saturday afternoon in connection with the Christchurch Football Club was North t. South, Hereford street being the dividing line. Both sides of the city were tolerably well represented, though the attendance of members was not quite so large as on the previous Saturday. Throughout the match the Northerners appeared to have a decided advantage over their opponents, the ball being kept continually in the Southerners ground, and frequently making its way behind the goal line. Though no goal was obtained by either side, some good play was shown, and at the close of the game the Northerners had placed five touch-downs and two-i'orce-downs to their credit, each try at goal being a failure. Several times the Southerners managed to place the north goal in considerable danger, but they did not succeed in scoring anything during the game. As was stated last week, no programme has yet been aranged, but since then a challenge has been received from Timaru to play a match with the Christchurch Club on Cranmcr Square on the 23rd instant, It is scarcely necessary tc say that it has been accepted. It is gratifying to learn that such an important match has been fixed to come off at so early a date, a visit from the representatives of tho Timaru club being an occasion which is always looked forward to with a great deal of interest and pleasure both by all lovers of football and tho public generally. Tho subject has been mooted by influential members of the Christchurch and other Canterbury clubs, that the football-playing portion of the province should be divided into three districts, with a view of getting a representative team from each to meet in Christchurch and play a series of matches for a valuable prize of some description. At the close of the series it is proposed to appoint a committee to select from the three teams a combined fifteen to represent Canterbury in matches with other provinces. Nothing lias been finally arranged, but the proposal is in contemplation, and is to be fully discussed at a meeting to be convened at an early dale.
