IMPORTANT LAND SALE. One of the best attended and most successful land sales held in Christchurch for a very long time past took place yesterday at Messrs R. Walton’s and Co.’s sale-rooms. Mr Walton acted as auctioneer, and succeeded in selling a very large amount of property at very high figures, particularly the property at Papanui belonging to Mr J. T. Matson, being an extension of the township of Papanni. For this, particulars of which will be found below, high prices were paid, the 25$ acres realising £9990, or about £4OO per acre. The price thus realised for suburban land plainly shows the great rise which has taken place during the past few years in the price of land in Canterbury. Prior to the sale of the Papanui property, several country and town properties were offered. Twenty acres at Kaiapoi, being R.S. No. 1823, brought £3 per acre. One acre two roods on the Opawa and Wilson’s roads brought £125, at which price it was bought by Mr R. Smith. The next lot offered was a piece of land at the corner of Worcester street and cast town belt, having a frontage of two chains on Worcester street and 83J links to the town belt, with two semi-detached fourroomed houses. It failed to reach the owner’s expectations, and was passed at £6OO. Following this was town section No. 560, situate on Oxford terrace, next to the Foresters’ Hotel. This was divided into two lots, one having a frontage of 30ft. and the other39ft. to Oxford terrace. After a spirited contest, both pieces fell to the nod of Mr W. Brice for £3OO each, or £6OO in all. Following upon this, Mr Walton offered a section situate at the corner of Lichfield and Barbadoes streets, with two sixroomed houses thereon, which was withdrawn at £970. A section fronting on Manchester street, adjoining the factory of Messrs Lighthand, Allan and Co., was next submitted. The frontage on Manchester street was 33ft., with 86ft. depth, audiu was started at £35 per foot. It ran up to £4310s per foot, at which price it passed in. A section fronting on Durham and Chester streets, having a frontage of 94ft. to Durham street and 97ft. to Chester street, was passed in at £650. Sixteen sections in the township of Waterton, at Lougbeach, were passed in at £8 per section. Four sections of one rood each in the township of Wheatstone, situate on the South lino, sold for £8 each. Twenty-six acres in Winslow were passed at £lss per acre. At this period a substantial luncheon was spread, and after due justice had been done to it and the liberal supply of champagne provided by the enterprising owner of the sections iu the extension of Papanui township, Mr Walton mounted the rostrum to offer these sections for sale. Previously to doing so, Mr Walton descanted on the advantages of these sections as residential sites in most eloquent terms. This apparently hail the desired effect, as the biddings came fast and furious, and the whole of the eighty-four sections submitted were sold at very high E rices. The block had been divided in;o three, aving roads running from the main North road hack to the railway, and included 25$ acres. The total value realised was £9990.
