On March 21st, the brigantine Omaha went ashore at Waitangi, Chatham Islands, owing to heavy weather. An inquiry was held before J. Deighton, Esq., R.M., at Waitangi. The evidence given showed that on March 21st it came on to blow hard from the N.W., and the heavy sea that soon got up obliged the Omaha to slip her anchor. This was successfully accomplished, but in trying to beat out of the bay the vessel missed stays after making one board, and touched the reef, the sea heaving her up on to it. For two tides the vessel lay ou the reef, but during that time she was thoroughly emptied, and one of her anchors run out to heave her off. At the expiration of the two days she came off the land, and by heaving ou her chain and setting all her canvas she was safely got off into deep water. The Conrt exonerated Captain Hughes from all blame in the matter. The Omaha has been beached in Dampier’s Bay, to be surveyed by Captain Duusford for the insurance companies. The damage she has sustained is very light. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. Auckland, May 1. The Australia sailed for San Francisco this afternoon.
