This tine vessel, belonging to the New Zealand Shipping Company, was signalled on Saturday afternoon, and came to an audio;ago off Diamond harbour same night. Sho was e’eared early yesterday morning. Mr Best is still chief ollicer, and tho faces of many of the officers and crew are those of old friends. It was evident that the ship had had heavy weather, and on enquiry it was found that not only had the early part of the voyage been accompanied with exceedingly had weather, hut that from March 19th to the end of the passage there had been a succession of very violent gales and heavy seas, which latter filled the decks, flooded the saloon, started main bulwark stanchions aud the topgallant rail from tho fore rigging to the waist, and did other serious damage. It was found necessary to barricade the poop and main hatchway during the had weather. It is satisfactory to learn that, thanks to tho precautions taken, no accident occurred, nud nil aboard the AVaikuto have arrived in good health. Apart from the stormy weather, nothing of interest occurred daring the voyage. The health of the passengers, who number forty-five, has been good throughout, so that the duties of Mr Howard Rees, the medical man. have been light. Concerts were given occasionally to relieve the monotony of the voyage. The second class and steerage passengers were comfortably lodged down the main hatchway. Tho passage, in spite of the rough weather and light trades, has not been a long one, the trip from land to land having occupied 86 days, aud from anchorage to anchorage 91 days. The following is Captain AVorster’s report of the trip :—Left London on Saturday, January 19th, 1878, anchored at Gravesend for the night; left again on Sunday morning, in tow of steam tng India, and proceeded on our way, passing Cleopatra’s Needle off Margate in tow of tho Anglia. Landed pilot at 5 p.m. in the Downs, and wont on in tow, the wind being moderate westerly. At 5 a.m. on Monday, 21st, the wind increased rapidly from AV.S.AV., and just abreast of Dnngeuoss tho tow-rope parted, so ran hack to the Downs, there being too ranch wind to bent out. Brought up off Deal with port anchor, and eighty fathoms of cable, and remained there till Saturday, 26th, strong westerly gales blowing the whole time. On the 26th the wind moderated aud went round to tho northward, so a start was made, and at 11 p.m. next day Start Point bore N.AV., ten miles distant, the tug having left the ship three hours before. On the 28th there was a fresh N.AV. gale, aud at 8 p.m. saw Ushant light, bearing S. by E. twenty-four miles distant. On the 31st signalled Shaw, Saville, aud Co.’s ship Electra, from London to Otago, aud on February 4th the ship Juno, from London to Sydney. On February sth experienced a violent S.E. gale, with very high sea, which caused the ship to labor heavily and take aboard a good deal of water. On February Bth passed withiu sight of the Island of Palma, and from that date to the 13th had moderate variable winds. The ship being then in lat. 23.40 N., long. 23.49 AV., she caught the first of the N.E. trades, which proved very light and unsteady, aud were lost again on the 21st in lat. 6 N., long. 27.04 AV. Crossed Equator on 34th in long. 29.16 AV., moderate S.E. winds prevailing, nud sighted Fernando Neronha on 26th. The S.E. trades were poor, aud were lost about the edge cf the tropics on March 6th. Next day spoke a steam-tng hound for the Cape of Good Hope, flying AV.V.K.N., aud on the 11th signalled the barque Eunnymede, from Liverpool to Port Adelaide. Moderate variable winds and flue weather prevailed from losing S.E. trades till March 18th, in lat. 40.15 S., long. 3.10 AV., when we got the first of the “ brave west winds.” On the 20th had fresh gale from W.N.AV. to AV.S.AV., and on the 22ud passed the meridian of the Capo in lat. 41.32 S. On the 23rd a fearful gale from AV.N.AV. to AV.S.AV. was experienced, during the which tho ship seemed at times to be almost under water, and two men had to be lashed to the wheel. On the 25th it moderated in lat. 39.49 S., long. 35.07 E. On the 30th there was a strong N.E. gale, with a heavy sea, aud from that date to April 12th had a succession of heavy gales from S. and N., N.E., S.E., and N.AV., accompanied with torrents of almost constant rain. Passed tho meridian of the Lenwin on the 13th April in lat. 45.20 S. Had moderate westerly winds and cloudy weather to Tasmania, which was passed ou the 20th in lat. 49 S., the easting having been run down between the 42nd aud 41th parallels. Sighted tho Snares ou AVeduesday last, aud had a good run to the Nuggets, thence light and variables prevailed up the coast, the Peninsula being rounded ou Saturday, aud the vessel arriving at her anchorage same night. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. Auckland, April 27. Owen and Graham received a cable message that the mail steamer Australia left Sydney for Auckland yesterday.
