Two hundred Chinese arrived yesterday per steamship Bertha, from Hong Kong, for New Zealand. The Chimborazo is expected to reach Sydney in the course of the week. Sailed —Hero. INTERPROYINOIAL. [per press agency.] Hokitika Criminal Session. Mr. Barton again. Auckland, March 27. A purse of sovereigns is to be presented to Captain Logan and Mr Cogswell, of the Hero, on her hundredth trip between Sydney and Auckland. In the criminal calendar there are seventeen charges against twelve prisoners. Nine of the charges are of a serious character. The City Council has accepted the tender of the National Bank for £25,000, supplementary water works loan, at 6 per cent, at 98 net. Levy and Goldwater have paid 15s in the pound, and received their discharge. Wellington, March 27. Mr Barton will, on Friday, bring on a motion in Banco to quash the order for his commitment for contempt of Court. The Postmaster-General has issued _ a stamped newspaper halfpenny wrapper, which will come into use on the Ist of April next. These wrappers will be sold in much the same way as postage stamps, but in parcels of not less than eighteen, or a multiple of it. It is stated that the retirement of several leading officials from the engineering department of the General Government will shortly take place. Sothern is drawing good houses. It is currently reported that the Hon. Dr. Pollen will assume the editorship of the “ New Zealand Times ” on the first of next month. _ Hokitika, March 27.
In the Supreme Court, before the Chief Justice, in the ease of Hamer, against whom there are twelve charges of embezzlement and one of larceny, the Grand Jury brought in a true bill. They also found true bills against William Miller for wounding a cow, and also a similar charge against Timothy O’Learv. The latter case is now proceeding. Hamer is expected to plead guilty. His defalcations are over £2OOO. Timothy O’Leary was found guilty of shooting a cow, but was remanded for sen. te j Ce H. Those who took the temperance pledge from Father Hennebory marched in procession through the principal streets this afternoon. There were about 400, including children, and the Hibernian Society in regalia, carrying flags and wearing temperance medals. 0 amaru, March 27.
At Cooper and Bailey’s Circus last night it is reported that the money taken at the door showed an attendance 9000, which is said to be the largest audience they ever had.
