CANTERBURY RAM FAIR.

Committee—Messrs Norman, Henderson, Bruce, Mann, and Ferguson.

The anuual ram fair in connection with the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association took place yesterday at the Show grounds. Previous to the sales commencing, a meeting of the committee and salesmen was held when t),\o following resolution was unanimously agreed to—“ That no auctioneer Shull exceed half an hour in selling his twenty jots, or, if putting up five lots, or a proportionately less number, he is not to exceed one and a half minutes to each lot. The members of the committee undertook the office of timekeeper in turns throughout tl\e day. The attendance of buyers was fair, and the number of entries in excess of lust year, hut, taken as a whole, there was no comparison in quality. The biddings generally wore by no means brisk, the best competition being for Messrs P. and J. Sutton’s and the Hon. Matthew Holmes’ entries. Pur one Lincoln ram belonging to Mr P. Sutton, which took second pri/o in his class at tire last Christchurch exhibition, there was some brisk bidding between Mr J. Sutton and Mr P, C. Thi’elkeld. Tho former gentleman, however, stood out longest, and when the sheep were knocked down to him for £47 10s, there was loud applause, though regret was generally expressed that so splendid a ram should bo allowed to leave Canterbury. Tho absence of Northern and Southern buyers was very noticeable, and the days of fifty and one hundred guinea purchases often referred to. Some idea of the difference between the prices obtained yesterday and those of previous years may ' be formed when it is mentioned that a Lincoln ram which fetched 27 guineas last year was purchased for O-i guineas yesterday. The best of the Romneys and sheep in othef classes were passed in, and de vGtal ‘of the lines ■tripic’n went tbr nomihal prices were said to liavo been purchased for boiling down purposes, for which they seemed to be best suited. It was the feeling of many present that the district is at present overstocked with rams of medium quality, not calculated to improve the excellent class of sheep Oauterjf\xrj already possesses. The largest buyer of

the day of prime rams was Mr J. H. David■on of the Levels Station, Timaru. The ewo fair will be held to-day, and though the entries do not reach the number of those last year, it is said that the quality will be in no way inferior. The catering arrangements were in the hands of Mr J. W. Morton, who provided an excellent luncheon for the committee and public. The following is the list of sales : By Messrs E. Wilkin and Co.
