INTERPROVINCIAL.

[per press agency.") Charleston, March 11. A fearful gale raged here on Saturday night. The Catholic Chapel was blown down and is a complete wreck. Great damage has been done to property in the district. Palmerston North, March 11.

A fire late last night destroyed the stables, harness-room, and outhouses of the Clarendon Hotel, which had a very narrow escape, the roof being on fire in several places. It was only saved by the exertions of the local volunteers, A large quantity of property was destroyed in McNeil’s storehouse. It is not covered by insurance. The only risk is £l5O in the National.

La wrench, March 11. The crops here have suffered considerably, especially the oats. It is doubtful if in a number of instances many acres of oats will be worth the trouble of harvesting. Sir Q-eorge Q-rey arrives here this afternoon at two o’clock. The children attending the Grammar Schools are to meet the party at the railway station. A banquet takes place in the evening. It is expected that the attendance will be unusually large. Dunedin, March 11.

At a banquet to Ministers, Mr Macandrew said he was not without hope that public opinion must compel Parliament to restore to the people provincial institutions, perhaps not as they were, but more adapted to the circumstances of the colony. At a private meeting of the Bar on Saturday the following resolution was carried by sixteen to three : —“ That this meeting, without expressing any opinion with regard to the circumstances and duration of Mr Barton’s recent imprisonment, is of opinion, from his statement, that a fair case exists for enquiry by Parliament, in the interests of all parties concerned.” Mr Macandrew leaves for the North today.
