Of the Turkish indemnity, amounting to 1.410.000. roubles, certain territory in Armenia will bo taken as representing 1.100.000. roubles, the balance to bo paid in money. London, March 8. Lord Derby, replying to a question, confirmed the announcement of an European Conference at Berlin, for the holding of which Austria opened negotiations on the basis proposed by England, and added that the British Government had asked that the whole treaty of peace between Russia and Turkey should be submitted to the Congress. In the course of a long debate, Lord Derby said, that although the treaties of 185 G-1861 now virtually ceased to exist, they must be held binding until Europe sanctioned a substitute. He hoped the Conference would effect an European, and not merely a Russian, settlement of the Eastern Question, as the latter would involve difficulties, the issue of which was uncertain.

Riverton, March 9.
The total loss by the late fire is now ascerto be £IO,OOO, of which only half was covered by insurance. The fire is supposed to have originated through a quantity of unslacked lime stored at the rear of the building getting wet. There is no fire brigade here, but volunteers manned a private engine, and by the help of a band of 200 men who formed a line, passing buckets from the river to the fire, it was prevented from spreading to a block valued at £40,000. The night was fortunately calm.

A prisoner named David McCracken, sentenced to six months at last sitting of the District Court, and also awaiting trial at the Supreme Court, on a charge of horse stealing, escaped from the hard labour gang on Friday evening, but was recaptured in a hay stack yesterday. The weather is very unsettled. It blew a furious nor’-wester yesterday afternoon till ei*ht at night, when the barometer fell to 28.40, and a terrific gale, with heavy rain, swept up from the southward, and continued till near midnight. It has now changed north again, but the barometer, which had risen, is again falling rapidly.
