CHRISTCHURCH TRAMWAYS.

A deputation from the Christchurch Tramway Company, consisting of Messrs C. W. Turner, J. Evans Brown, J. G. Hawkes (directors), and J. Birch (hon, sec.), met the tramway committee of the City Council, viz., his Worship the Mayor, and Crs. Pratt and Jameson, last evening at the Council Chambers. His Worship the Mayor occupied the chair. Mr Turner informed the committee that the Tramway Company had been duly registered under the Act, and the articles of association been signed and registered. The order of consent, guaranteeing to construct the tramway in accordance with the provisions of the Act, was read. After discussion, it was agreed that, the conditions arranged between the committee and the company (subject to the O uncil’s ratification) should be sent up to the Government for approval. A general discussion followed on other matters proposed, the result being as follows (subject to the Council’s approval):—The company to be compelled at any time to form lines proposed by the Council, on receiving a guarantee that a reasonable profit—to be agreed upon —would be derived from the undertaking. The company undertook to form these lines, centring in Cathedral square—viz., from Papanui, Addington, and railway station. These lines of roadway were guaranteed to be constructed within twelve months, and opened within twenty-four months; width of rail suggested, 4ft. Bfcin. A lengthy conversation followed on the scale of charges to be made, and the following were suggested From Papanui to Cathedral square, Addington to ditto, railway to ditto, 3d ; children under twelve years, half-price ; children in arms, nil. Goods—2Blbs with passengers, 3d ; with passengers and 561hs luggage, 6J ; with passengers and 112 lbs, 9d. Double rates after 6 p.m. All these prices to bo cbnsidered maximum rates. Packages exceeding lewt. to be at the discretion of the company. After some remarks the deputation agreed on behalf of the company that, if the Council would find trucks, they would be prepared to carry free of cost metal for repairing the roads. Twenty-one years were proposed as the term of leasing the roadways, with power to the Council to purchase at the end of that term by giving six months’ notice in writing; the terms to be settled by valuation. An authority was reserved for inspection by the Council’s officers. In the representations of the committee it was advanced lhat the benefit of keeping the roads in repair would prove an advantage of at least £IOOO a year to the ratepayers, and should in the view of the Council be sufficient consideration for the concession granted to the company. Several plates of street car* on the American and London lines of tramway were submitted by the company and considered. Among the many approved, one at present working on the North Metropolitan lines capable of carrying forty-four passengers was admired for the easy mode of access and egress it afforded. The committee promised to consider the representations of the company, and then Submit them to the Council for approval. Tbil mkW tip btotow*

Clerk of the Scales —Mr James •• eyuolds. Clerk of the Cour e—Mr John Stmbury. The fir*t meeting in connection with this club was held on the flat opposite White’s Mill, at Little River, on Saturday last. The day was fine, the fields fairly good, and the sport was enjoyed by a large number of the inhabitants of the surrounding districts. The course was in good order, but the fences as a rule were too high for the class of horses which had to negotiate them, and the consequence was that they got broken down towards the latter part of the day, and a rush was made by the various jockeys for the gaps. Mr Moreshe id, of Tai Tapu, received a rather serious spill from his horse at one of the fences, but it is hoped that in a few days he will be able to be about again. The attention paid to visitors at the recently erected hotel was good, and altogether an agreeable day was spent.
