SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

An ordinary meeting of the Svdenham Borough Council was held last night in the Council Chamber. Present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. Booth), and Councillors Whitelaw, Langdown, Buxton, Hall, Jones, Charters, Brown, Vennall, and Scott. The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed, the following business was transacted : COESBBPONDENCE. A letter was read from the Gas Company notifying their intention to lay down their mains in Colombo street as far as the Pound road. It was referred to the works committee. A letter was read from the Christchurch Drainage Board, asking for a copy of the valuation roll of the Sydenham Borough. It was resolved that the request be granted, the Drainage Board paying for the clerical work. A letter was read from Mr Wynn Williams informing the Council of the completion of the sale of a quarter-acre in Colombo road to the Sydenham Borough. A letter from the secretary of the Gas Company was read, informing the Council that the gas inspector had been ordered to visit and report upon the district. INSURANCE. A letter from the New Zealand Insurance Company was read, reminding the Council that the insurance on their buildings had expired. It was resolved to reinsure in the same company. SUBSIDIES. A letter from the Colonial Treasurer was read, explaining the principle upon which deductions from subsidies on account of hospitals &c., are made. In answer to a question from Cr. Whitelaw, his Worship the Mayor stated that he had not received any invitation from the City Council to attend a conference, at which the matter of hospitals &nd charitable institutions were to be considered. Cr. Whitelaw said that from his personal knowledge he was convinced that a majority of cases treated in the ii.stitutions referred to came from the country districts. The letter from the Treasury was referred to the finance committee. BRIDGE OYEE COLOMBO HOAD RAILWAY CROSSING. His Worship the Mayor laid upon the table a plan of a bridge over the Colombo road railway crossing, which had been sent to him by Mr W. H. Esplanett. Cr. Whitelaw moved that the plan he acknowledged with thanks, and that Mr Esplanett be informed that at the present time the necessity of dealing in such a mode with the crossing is not, recognised by the Council. The motion was agreed to. RAILWAY CROSSINGS. Cr. Whitelaw moved that the question of making charges for railway crossings be reopened for the purpose of hearing the works committee’s report in connection therewith. The motion was agreed to. The report alluded to was then read by Cr. Whitelaw. It contained clear and detailed specifications as to the construction of crossings and sidings, together with the terms and conditions upon which they would be permitted. The report was received and adopted as a whole, and then taken into consideration clause by clause. Considerable discussion took place as to the length of time for which the privilege should be in the first instance granted beyond the power of recall. The Council eventually went into committee, and agreed upon the regulations to be adopted. After some further business, the Council adjourned.
