At the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day, David M'Cracken was committed for trial to the Supreme Court for horse stealing, and to the District Court for stealing a saddle and bridle. A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held to-day to receive a report of the committee appointed to enquire into the new grain tariff. The report strongly pointed out the injustice of the tariff between Timaru and Lyttelton, and urged that all stations should be put on an equal footing. The report will be sent to the Government, the Dunedin and Oamaru Chambers of Commerce and Harbor Board, and the latter bodies will be requested to join with Timaru in the matter. In the District Court to-day the case of Palmer v Cliff was heard. The claim was for £2OO damages in connection with the erection of the New Union Bunk, Timaru. The case, which has been pending for a long time, concluded by plaintiff obtaining judgment for £45 and costs.
