Tho college committee had had qnder their consideration tho question of the best means of inspection and examination of tho Girls’ High schtoj. and ol o a standard for the entrance examination which intending pupils would be required to pass before being admitted to the school. Vienna, had kindly undertaken to purchase metallurgical collection for the School of Mines, and a Bank draft had been forwarded fc> that gentleman to defray the cost. Mr 'I hurso, of Ballarat. had been requested to forward information respecting he of such models and specimens required, and which might be obtained in Victoria. MEETINGS ,OE BOARD. Mr Malet moved—“ That the words * first Friday’ in standing orders ho. 1 be omitted, and 1 last Thursday ’ inserted instead.” Mr Fereday seconded the motion. Rev. C. Fraser moved as an amendment—- “ That the words ‘first Thursday’ be inserted instead of ‘last Thursday.’ ” Mr Webb seconded the amendment. On being put, the words “first Friday” in the original motion were struck out. Rev. C Fras' r having withdrawn hia amendment, the insertion of the words “last Thursday ” was agreed ta. NOMINATION OF GOVERNORS. The Chairman said he would now be prepared to receive > ominations for the vacancies caused by the resignations of Mr H. F. Gray and the Yen. Archdeacon Willock. Mr C. C Bowen was nominated by Mr Malet, and Mr H. P. 1 ance, 8.A., by Mr Fereday. The Chairman said that at the next meeting he would be prepared to receive nominations for two other vacancies on the Board. COLLEGE COMMITTEE. The Board w nt into committee to consider a report brought up by the college committee. On resuming, the Chairman reported that the committee had agreed to the various clauses of the report, as under, with the exception of danse No. 3, the consideration of which had been postponed until next Board meeting 1. committee recommends the Board to offer to the Medical Council the use of the Board-room to hold their meetings therein if necessary. 2. That the Board he recommended that the reduction of 10 per cent, from the fees paid at the Girl’s High school be made only in cases which involve the use of musical instruments the property of the Board. 3. That the Board be recommended to erect the eastern wing of the College building, to be paid for out of the moneys at the disposal of the College. 4. The committee recommends the Board to submit the examination of the Girl’s High school to the inspection required by the Education Act, 1877, but trusts that the Board of Education will endeavour to arrange with the Government for the appointment of special examiners, or for placing the school under inspection by the InspectorGeneral. 5. The committee recommends to the Board that no one be admitted as a pupil of the Girl’s High school, who is not able to pass in the following; Beading from the Fourth Book of Graduated Series ; spelling from the same book; writing from d ctation from the same book; grammar, the distinguishing of all the parts of speech in easy sentences; geography, knowledge of geographical terms, of the meaning of a map, and of the leading features of the map of the world: history, a general knowledge of the leading facts and dates of English history, period 1066 to 1399. 6. Girls' High School—The lady principal having ascertained the extent of the knowledge of each, pupil in the various subjects in which they were examined at the commencement of the term, proposes to have an examination at the end of the term so that the progress made by each pupil may be known and recorded. The committee considers that no further examination will be required daring the current term. 7. The committee is of opinion that the school should be iuspected about the middle of the ensuing term by a duly qualified inspector, and that his report should he laid before the Board and published. That an annual examination should be held at the end of the third term in December, and that the examiner’s report shouldlbe published. Prizes should he given by the Board to pupils who had distinguished themselves at the annual examination. Rev. C. Fraser moved the adoption of the report with the insertion of the woids “forthe future,” after the word “that” in the first line of the sth clause. Mr Webb seconded the motion, which was agreed to, and the report as a whole adopted. boys’ high school. A sk-tch design and plan of the proposed Boys’ High school, to cost not more than .£6OOO, sent in by Mr Armson, architect, was considered. After some remarks on the general introduction of sm 11 instead of large class rooms as at present, into the American schoolroom, and the satisfactory result attained— Rev. Mr Fraser moved—“ That the Board approves of the sketch plan for the Boys’ High, school buildings, and authorises the College committee to make any necessary mo Tficationa, including a refectory and out offices, and advertise for tenders without delay.” Mr Webb seconded the motion, which waa agreed to. TRANSFER OF RESERVES. The Estates committee recommended the transfer of certain reserves and leases, which were approved by the Board. CHRISTCHURCH HOSPITAL. A letter from the Colonial Secretary with reference to the above institution was referred to the Medical Council with a request that they kindly report thereon. In answer to Mr Potts the Chairman said the next meeting of the Board would be held on the fourth Thursday in the month. The Boa d then adjourned.
