DUNEDIN TRAINING NOTES.

[By Telegbaeh.] fjeom the cobbespoitdent of |the pbess ] Dttnedin, February 24. " Pegasus " in Saturday's "Star" writes : At the Forbury this morning Ray had a trial of Templeton, Titania, and Punga. The three were stripped, and sent the Cup distance on the running track, the hurdles being taken down. Titania went away with the lead for the first mile, but in the second round Templeton overhauled her, and beat her at the finish. Punga was close up, but after being rubbed down she showed signs of lameness, and it was found that she had split her off hind hoof. TMb will, of course, necessitate her being thrown out of work. Punga had been backed for a good deal of money for the Cup and the Publicans' Handicap ; in fact, for the big race she had during the last few daya been as good a favorite as anything, except Hippocampus. Betting haß been rather quiet during the week, but three or four horses being steadily backed at short prices, this has slightly affected the position of the favorite; against him 4 to 1 "has actually been laid in small amounts. The probability is this is hedging money, for his supporters are as confident as ever. Next in demand come Ariel, Templeton, and Pungawere were ; Titania and Bribery having receded in consequence of inquiry for their respective stable companions. Chancellor has gone to outside prices since Oberon put him through in their trial. The latter has been backed by a good many with the idea lie will be reserved for the Cup, and not have his chance spoilt by going for the Maiden Plate. There is no betting on the Derby, but doubles on Cup and Derby, and Cup and Publicans' Handicap, Cup and D.J.C. Handicap, and Hurdle race and Steeplechase, are taken freely at prices ranging from 100 to 10 to 100 to 3. Trebles on Cup, Derby, and Jockey Club, or Cup, Publicans' Handicap, and D.J.C. Handicap are laid at 100 to 2. The following is the latest betting on the Cup : 3to 1 agst Hippocampus. 6to 1 agst Ariel. 7to 1 agst Templeton. 9to 1 agst Longlands. 100 to 10 ag=t Bribery. 100 to 10 agst Titania. 100 to 6 agst Orange Lightning. 100 to 6 beat Cloth of Gold, i<jl) to 5 agst Obeiqn. 100 to 5 a;.stliuna! 100 to 5 to "3 agst any other. Later. —Punga has gone wrong. She will be scratched for all engagements.
