The following alterations in the railway freight rates are, by “ Gazette ” notice today, to come into force from 18th February : Grain—Rate for freight of grain from Timaru and Washdyko stations to Lyttelton station to bo 14s per ton. Wool —Prom Timaru and Washdyke stations to Lyttelton, 6s fid per bale of 4 cwt. An attempt is being made to bring out Mr Hutchison, late Mayor, to contest the election against Mr Pearce in the Grey interest.
Auckland, February 15. Mr Firth transhipped to the Hawea half a million white fish, which arrived per mail steamer for the General Government.
Dunedin, February 15. The Hon. the Minister for Public Works and Mr Carruthers have arrived. Mr Larnach stated at Palmerston that the main trunk line would be open from Moeraki to Palmerston in six weeks. A vote of confidence in Mr McLean at the meeting at Palmerston last night was carried by 36 to 16. Intehcaegill, February 15.
Martin, Maitland and Co. sold by auction to-day the Bemnore station, including 18,518 acres freehold, 21,855 leasehold, and 1500 sheep to Mr Mabin Wyndham at £24,500. There was a large attendance of capitalists.
