Mr Berry, the Victorian Premier, regards Earl Beaconsfield’s statement regarding the fleet as a virtual declaration of war. He had been informed by the Imperial authorities previously that war was inevitable. Everything was placed on a war footing in Victoria to-day. AUSTRALIAN. Melboubne, February 14. The prospect of war with Russia has created a political lull. Business is unsettled. Active preparations for the defence of the port are being pushed. Sydney, February 14. The Assembly has under consideration the Estimates. A motion tjo reduce the immigration vote of £75,000 by £25,000 has been negatived.
