AUSTRALIA v. AUCKLAND.
[By Telegraph.] [from the correspondent of the press.] Auckland, February 8. _ The following are the particulars of Friday’s play. The Australians sent in the two Bannermaus to the bowling of Lynch (fast right hand) and Robinson (medium pace left hand). Both batsmen commenced very cautiously, and runs came very slowly. Lynch sent in live consecutive maidens, and from the first ball of his fifth caught A. Bannerman off his own bowling, the score standing at 4 runs for one wicket, the retiring batsman having mad© 1. Horan, the second best batsman of the team, followed, and Bannerman scored a couple of 3’s off Lynch, and hit tho same bowler to square-leg hard twice for 2 each time. _ This brought on Buckland instead of Robinson, but Horan hit him hard for 3 behind point off his first ball, and Bannerman got 2 off his last. The score mounted quickly to 30, but at 32 Horan put one up to Wood at forward point, which was held, and the telegraph showed 32—2—12. Spofforth followed, but, after making a single, had his middle stump uprooted by a fine ball from Lynch, and three good wickets were gone for 36 runs. Next came Boyle, and Wood was put on in place of Buckland, and sent down several overs for on© run. Tho score at lunch time showed 44 runs for three wickets. On resuming play Bannerman commenced to be very busy and when 56 had been scored, Nolan was put on at Wood s end. The change at first did not work, but shortly after 70 appeared on the telegraph board, Boyle let out at one gof Nolan’s and was splendidly caught by Yates at long field on, the retiring batsman having made 22 by steady play, and tho score standing 70 for four wickets. Murdoch had hardly Joined Bannerman when tho latter played one into short-leg’s hands and retired for an excellent score of 36, well played for and. well deserved, Gregory, the captain, then Joined Murdoch, but when 79 runs only were scored, the latter in trying to drive one off Lynch, sent it in the direction of third man, where it was well secured by Buckland. Score—B2—6—4. Garrett and Gregory gave the field some trouble, and brought on Robinson iu place of Nolan, who succeeded in bowling Gregory. Score —107—7—14. Blackham added 2 and then lost Garrett—caught by Nolan—-for 19, the score being 114. Bailey an<^. , ack m£° l hit about merrily and ran swiftly- Inia brought on a change of bowling, Wood tor Robinson at 136, and Nolan for Wood at 145, and Buckland for Nolan at 153. the batsmen stuck until a good piece d£ fielding Wwi $ 5W’
ham, who had played patiently, and run well for his score of 10. Kendall stayed for a few overs, and Lublin relieved Lynch, who had bowled splendidly throughout the innings, and when 6 more runs had been added the left-hander was caught at longslip by Lawrey off Buckland, leaving Bailey to bring out his bat for 44 an excellent innings, not devoid of merit. The score has been already published. BOWLING ANALYSIS.
Satybday, Fbbbttaby 9. The match was resumed yesterday. The weather continued bad. but about 1500 people assembled to see Auckland play their second innings. Robinson and Mumford started the batting to the bowling of Kendall and Spofforth. Only 4 runs had been scored when Robinson played all round one of Spofforth’s, and a good wicket was down for 4 runs only. Wood joined Mumford, and the two played good cricket, getting most of their runs to short leg. When 14 runs had been scored Boyle relieved Kendall, who could hardly stand on the slippery ground. Mumford out his first ball for 2, but was stumped soon after. 16—2—12. Mumford played well for his runs. Swanson joined Wood, and defended his wicket while the latter hit, so that Garrett relieved Boyle, and when one run more had been added Wood was caught out at mid-on by Kendall. Score—2 B—3—l. Carter followed, and Swanson having been “yorked” by Spofforth, Lynch came forward amidst applause. He played Garrett well in the slips for two, but in Spofforth’s next over was clean bowled, the bails being sent fully thirty-five 'yards. Yates joined Carter and received a severe blow on the arm. An adjournment was then made for luncheon—(ho score being 38 for five wickets. On resuming play a great change took place, for Spofforth and Garrett wero so dead on that nothing could be done with them, and the wickets were sent flying one after the other. Yates got 4, and was then caught by Bannerman in trying to drive Spofforth, who bowled Gleeson next ball. Garrett sent Carter’s offstump flying, and Curtis, trying to drive Spofforth, was stumped. Lankham was caught by Murdoch at third mau, and Grierson bowled by Spofforth for 0. Garrett disposed of Cotton, Russell, Lawry, and Cameron for two runs, made by Russell, and the telegraph showed 40—16—2. Dacre was bowled for nothing, and then Buckland and Nolan made a stand, the former contributing 10, the latter 5. Both wore bowled by Garrett, who also disposed of Philson and Whewell, the innings closing for 62, leaving the Australians winners in one innin gs with runs to spare.
