ENGLAND r. COLONIES. The above match was continued on Saturday, and the play was an improvement on the previous Saturday, The game stood as follows—Colonies: first innings, 161, and England 27, with three wickets down. Ncilson and Austin, the “not outs,” resumed their places at the wicket to the bowling of Fuller and 0. Frith. After a single by Austin, Neilson failed to play a “yorker.” 28—4—8. W, H. Moore came, and at once set to work, sending his first ball for 3. By his vigorous hitting the telegraph soon showed that the score was increasing rapidly—4o, s*o, and then GO going up. Then the bowlers changed ends, and the result was highly satisfactory, as Austin, who had played a good innings, was dismissed by Fuller. Godby eamo, and after one or two narrow escapes of being bowled, assisted Moor© in punishing the bowlers ; but at last Fuller was again successful, and Godby was persuaded to retire to the pavilion, a ball from the bowler just taking the bails. Stevens came nest, but a fine break-back from Fuller proved too much for him. Moore meanwhile had nob been idle, as the score had increased from 86 to 101 in a very short time. The end was now near, as Moore was caught at mid-on soon afterwards—eight for 103. The remaining wickets fell rapidly—nine for 107, ton for 108, and eleven for 114. With 47 to the good the Colonies commenced their second innings with T. R. Moore and J. Allen. The former was clean bowled by Ashby with his second ball, Allen having made one off the first. Watson came, but lost his partner with the score at 11. Mathias joined Watson, and after some steady play by both batsmen the telegraph showed 20, bub Moore gave Watson a fine break back which he failed to stop. He played well for his score of 10, and but for a nasty hit from Ashby would have been more troublesome. Hartland came next, and played in good form, but lost his companion as soon as 30 had gone up. 0. Frith came out, and after playing two balls with his bat, played the next with his knee, against which the bowler appealed and Mill ton had to appear, but unfortunately through a defective glove had to retire after thefirstball. Four, five, and six for 30. W.Frith now came, and with Hartland played on until time was called, when the score stood at 49 for six wickets. The light was very bad at the close of the innings, and this accounts in a measure for the small score. Hartland, who was not out for 14, played well. As noticed before the cricket was an improvement on that of last Saturday; but if some of the fieldsmen practised returning the ball to the wickets, a greater improvement would take place.
