AUSTRALIA v. AUCKLAND. [By Telegraph.] [from the correspondent of the press.] Auckland, February 7. The weather was far from propitious, though at one time it promised well. Rain fell at frequent intervals, and twice the players were driven to seek the shelter of the tents. The match was commenced shortly alter 12 o’clock. Robinson, the Auckland captain, winning the toss from Gregory, elected to go in on a good wicket, which had been carefully prepared, and played well throughout. Gleeson and Lankham commenced the batting to the bowling of Kendall and Spofforth. The first over was a maiden well played by Gleeson, but the second ball of Spofforth’s over dismissed Lankham, one wicket falling. I—l—o. J. Wood stopped several good ones, and then Gleeson played over one of the lefthander’s, and was given out. 2—2—o. Swanson succeeded, and ho and Wood played the good bowling well, scoring 8 off the bad ones, of which there were not many. When the score had bad risen to 15, Wood was bowled for 8, an innings worth more than the figures show. Carter, at the second appeal for a catch at the wicket was given out — 16 4—o, and Lynch, a good man, was caught by Boyle immediately afterwards, with the score unaltered. Yates joined Swanson, the latter being shortly afterwards given out Ibw for a good innings of 9, which had been 10 but for a short run. 18—7—9. Whitaker and Yates were getting well set when the latter, one of the best bats, and who scored so well against tho Englishmen, was run out for a single. 18—8—1. Mumford assisted with two singles to raise the score to 22, when Whitaker was caught by Bailey, off Spofforth, at point; and Mumford, with the score unaltered, was howled by Kendall. Curtis was bowled by Spofforth almost the first ball bo received, and, though the captain and Grierson added 3 each, both were bowled ere luncheon time, at whieh time the score stood at 30 runs for twelve wickets. Rain then interrupted the play for some time. On resuming a much better stand was made. Cotton and Lawry were the batsmen, the latter being caught at point off Spofforth for 0. Cameron added 1, a hard forward hit and was run out. Buckland, with Cotton,, brought the score to 43, when Gregory had the former at short slip, and Cotton, when 4 more had been added, put 1 up to A. Bannerman at mid off, and was easily caught. 47 — 16—8. Dacre and Russell then made a good stand far the best of the day, stopping the good ones and hitting the bad ones. Both hit hard forward, and compelled the Australian captain to change the howjerp - Kendall, when 60 bad beeq
scored, being replaced by Garrett, still run* mounted up, though tho fielding of the Australians converted many hard hits into singles, and when 70 was reached it was hoped that Auckland would score three figures. Only two more were added, however, before a real good one off Garrett completely boat Dacre, and he retired with 18 to his name, in which there were two S’s and two 2’s. Nolan, a left-handed batsman, joined Russell, and hit Spofforth hard to cover-point for 2. Ho added 2 more, and then Spofforth sprouted his leg stump. 80 —18—4. Philson, who followed, assisted Russell to, run 4, and was then bowled by Spofforth, whose next was fatal to Lublin. Whewell, the last man, joined Russell, and added 1, and then Russell, who had played a round steady innings of 15, was given out as being stumped by Blackham, tho wicket-keeper, off Spofforth.
