WELLINGTON RACES. [By Telegraph.] [FROM THE SPECIAL EEPOKTEB OF THE PBESL.] Wellington, February 7. A cold drizzling morning ushered in the first day of the Wellington meeting, and, no doubt, militated greatly against tho attendance, which was not so large as might have been expected, the ladies particularly being conspicuous by their absence. The Governor was present, but left before the last race. The course, which has been enlarged, was, owing to the recent rain, very heavy going in some places, and the sport was not particularly good. The proceedings commenced with tho weight-for-age Hurdle Eace, for which event the Canterbury horse, Grey Momus, was a strong favorite, Shark, a Napier horse, was the next in favor, but Victor, who was in rare buckle, and who made no mistake, made all th,e running, and won easy. Grey Momus refused, and fell once. Shark was out-paced, while Te Whetu was not made enough use of in the early part of the race. The Hack Hurdle Eace brought out a field of seven, and was won by Forest Queen, and then Trump Card virtually walked over for the Derby. Chokebore and Standard Bearer were his only opponents, and the latter, even with Bob Ray up, showed temper, and would not race a yard after the first half mile. Eight weighed out for the Flying Stakes, and Titania was pretty freely supported at even money, Isaac Walton, who looked out of sorts, and Glenary being the most in favor. Kakapo, too, was far from friendless, but this last, as might be expected, is not the Kakapo of old. The race is easily described. Titania won it all the way, Isaac Walton ran stiffly, op he might have been more formidable than he was. Only three came to the post for the Maiden, Pinfiro being a strong favorite with 2 to 1 on him. It was a capital race, Tallyrand was completely out-paced. After a hack race, in which Annie and Peter Flat ran, the mare beating a field of four, the bell rang for the Wellington J. 0. Handicap, Ray started Titania and Danebury, declaring to win with the latter, and the chestnut started at even money, and the public wished to get on him, very few of the others being supported. As it turned out, however, the favorite was never in the hunt, and the stable had to use their second string. It was the race of the day, and a really good one. Titania won on the post after a rattling finish. Songster, who was very pink, beating Otupai, the Maori crack, for second place. I append details:— Hurdle Eace, of 59 sovs. One mile and a distance. The flag fell to rather a straggling start, when Victor went at once to tho front, followed by Grey Momus, Shark, and Te Whetu in the order named. They ran thus, a long interval being between each horse to the second hurdle, where the favorite refused and was passed by the other two. Victor, with a strong lead, was the first over the second hurdle, followed by Shark and Grey Momus. The two rather fell back than gained on Victor up to the back of the course, where Shark refused and Grey Momus fell. Te Whetu drew up slightly on Victor, but the race was never in doubt, for the jlatter came on full of running, and won eventually in a common canter; Te Whetu, who was rather unnecessarily ridden out, second. Glonary got a bit the best of the start, Standard Bearer being left at the post, and cleared off the course. Glenary led to the half-mile post, closely followed by Sailor and Isaac Walton, Here Kakapo improved his position, Titania lying on his quarter. At tho last turn Demuth brought the favorite to tho front, and Kakapo died away, beaten in the run home. Titania had the race in her own hands, winning comfortably by two lengths, and a good finish ensued between Isaac Walton and Stirabout for second place, Mr Walters’ horse having a couple of lengths the best of it. Bet,ting—Even money on Danebury, 4 to 1 agst the rest. After some fiddling at the post, in which the Songster colours were conspicuous, the flag dropped to a good start. Stanley cut out the work, with Otupai and Titania close up, Danebury lying next, almost a length in front of the ruck. They ran thus to the back of the course, where Songster came through his horses, and got on terms with Titania and Otupai, with Stanley still making play. These three came away from the field, and it was evident that the favorite’s bolt was shot. A splendid race homo ensued. Coming to the turn the four closed and raced together to the rails, when Stanley fell back beaten, and Titania, after a very capital race, won by half a length frdm Songster, who finished about a length in front of Otupai. Stanley was fourth, and Danebury fifth. Time, Imin. 50sec.
