CANTERBURY AND OTAGO CRICKETERS.
The following resolutions were passed at a recent meeting of tho Otago Cricket Association : —l. “ That in the opinion of this comjnittco it is much to bo regretted that the arrangements under which our annual cricket imatich between Canterbury and Otago has r De eu played should now be broken through; Shat in the face of the resolution p issed by the Christchurch cricketers last year when the Otago Association had a difficulty in finding a team, tire committee cannot accept the reasons given by tho secretary as sufficient warrant for breaking a custom so long established.” 2. “ That tho secretary forward a copy of the above resolution to tho Canterbury Association, with a copy of last year's gorgespondence on tho subject of the Intcrproyin<cial Match, and request the secretary of the Canterbury Association to publish tho same in the Christchurch papers,” The following ils the correspondence : “ T. S. Sweet, Esq., Christchurch. “ Dear Sir—At a meeting of the Cricket Association Committee, held last evening, after careful consideration it was resolved that, in view of the contemplated visit of the All-England Eleven it was undesirable to play the usual match with Christchurch t his year, and I was instructed to convey the resolution to you. I may say that wo reel that to carry out the A.E.E. arrangements will bo #mto as much as wo can manage, entailing an (they will much labour and expense; but wo •shall, ojt course, be glad to resume our snatches tho following year, it still being our slum to visit town. “ Trusting that the above will meet with Alio approval of your cricketers, I am, &c., ‘‘John Q. E-va, “ Hon. Sec. 0.(3.1. November Itth, 1877.” “November 24th, 1876. “ To J. C. Eva, Esq., Dunedin. “ Dear Sir, —I enclose you resolution passed by our committoi in answer to your letter of tfie loth, and hope you w,ij] thoroughly reconsider your decision, as indignation hero is very great, tho cricketers themselyec much preferring your match to the All England JfJfpyen. An early answer would oblige.—l am, Ac., “Tuoa, Sweet, “ ICon. Sec. i.M. Committee.” “That the secretary write to I ho Otago Cricket Association, remonstrating with them with reference to their refusal to play (lie annual match at Christ churchy and asking them to reconsider their decision. As it would bo very much against the interest of cricket
in Otago and Canterbury, and as Canterbury sent an eleven to Otago in 18(55 notwithstanding that an All-England Eleven match was played during that season under more adverse circumstances, they cannot agree to abandon the match.” « T. 8. Sweet, Esq., Christchurch.” “ Dear Sir,—Your answer to my letter of November 15th has been laid before a general meeting of cricketers for their consideration. The result is that the decision of the Association has been set aside, and in deference to tho ‘ indignation’ mentioned by you as being prevalent amongst the Christchurch cricketers, an eleven will be sent to Christchurch during tlie month of January ns usual. It, of course, is at present impossible to fix the exact date, as that must in some measure depend on the steamers. I shall, however, in the meantime be glad to receive any suggestions from you ns to what you think tho most suitable time. “I forward you the “Daily Times” with the report of the meeting.—l am, &c., “ John O.
