AQUATICS.
PRACTICE FOR THE COLONIAL REGATTA. [By Teleqbaph.] [feom: the coeeespondent op the pbess.] Wanganui, February 5. The Canterbury men were out first this morning, at 6 o’clock, and took a row down the river, going about three miles. I was pleased with their style, although at times they do not catch the water so well together as was expected. Still I consider this the best row that has been done yet, the boat falling at a nice pace the whole way. There is no doubt that the new coxswain has something to do with it. They go over the champion course this afternoon, when I will be able to have a better look at them. The Wellingtonians did not row their four before breakfast, although Hearn and Walker went out sculling. This reminds me that yesterday, in a short flutter between Holdich (Wanganui man) and Hearn, the former had the best of it, but I hear he cannot last two miles. The four-oar crew took the water at 10 30 a.m., going down the river. They went away nicely, but one can never like their style, the stroke being so short. I managed to catch them at work. They were then rowing thirty-five a minute. It was no stroke at all--simply a splash in the water—consequently the boat loses way directly the stroke is finished. They continue to keep time, but do not swing together. Hearn appears to be finisb’ng his swing as his oar is in the water for tho next stroke. Walker would row a nice oar if he could be induced to finish his stroke better. There is very little speculation at present, the betting on both crews being level.
