SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS.
UPPER HEATHCOTE. The following is the annual, report by the Upper Heathcote School Committeo of its proceedings during the past year, as rend by Sir Cracroft Wilson, chairman: —"The tabular statements furnished to the Board of Educations are so full and explicit that little remains for the committee to dwell upon in their annual report. A copy of these is attached for the information of householders. Tho committee place the account of receipts and expenditure and also tho bank-book before the meeting. The committee regret that these accounts have not been audited. The reason for this has been tho summarily doing away on the part of the Colonial Government of the office of auditor, and his consequent absence at Wellington for a considerable period. As chairman and treasurer, I assure the householders that the accounts are correct. The average number of scholars in attendance during the past year is 91, being an increase on tho average number for the year 1870". Mrs J. Langbridge having been duly elected, took charge of tho infant classes on tho 24th April, 1877. The Government allowanco for the purchase of prizes, viz , £2 'ii 6d, wa3 supplemented to the extent of £4 from the fund raised by private subscription, which amounted to over £lO. The distribution of prizes and the school fete took place ou Friday, 2nd March, 1877, the former at the school, and the latter at Cashmere. After all bills of tradesmen had been paid, there remained an unexpended balance of £2 13s 4d. This sum was offered me by the committee to assist in reimbursing mo for the expenses incurred at Cashmere. Having been declined, the amount was, with the concurrence of the committee, left in the hands of the schoolmaster as the nucleus of a fund for the purpose of an entertainment in 1878." PAPANLT. The report for the past year was read and adopted. The chairman alluded to the very satisfactory state of the school, and to the energy displayed by the teachers. The number on the register is 162 ; the number of those who had attended during the year, 102. It was stated that there are three private schools in Papanui, including the Roman Catholic school, the attendance at which is 56'. These of course affect the Government school. The following are the names of tho new committee—Messrs Munro, Cress well, Godfrey, Jones, Hudson, Harris and Stewart. At a meeting held afterwards, Mr Crcsswell was appointed chairman for the ensuing year.
